Default muffler strap

I just bought a walker muffler from advanced auto and was wondering what I should do with the muffler strap. The one currently on the car was put on two years ago when the muffler was still fairly new. Within two years, the muffler rusted through right where the strap goes across. Is there any better way to strap this muffler without causing it to rust out in a year or two? Also, I've heard of drillling holes in aluminized mufflers to let the condensation out, is this a good idea?

If the muffler is rusting out under the strap it has nothing to do with what is on the inside of the muffler. It is more than likely water/salted water trapped between the strap and the muffler causing the problem.

Are you in a salty area in the winters???? If you are, in the winter, wash the exhaust/ mufflers/ brackets off at the car wash ON LOW PRESSURE. Salt eats that stuff in no time. better water than salt. Also who was the bracket made by? There are some cheapo aftermarket crap that doesnt last for hell. We got the factory bracket from Saturn (Plated) and It's held up really well in our harsh Cleveland and Boston winters. It was really cheap for how long they last, only like 18 bucks.

I called the dealer about it a while ago - they gave me a price of I think $58 (but that does include the nut and bolt....) for the muffler strap/hanger assy. That was in NJ.

Yeah, I live in KS and they really put down the salt in the winter. I think it was just a cheap autozone or advanced auto strap he used. What's weird is that the muffler rusted out before the strap did. I installed the new muffler this morning and used the old strap. It has a lot of surface rust but should last for awhile, I'd think. I was thinking about painting it with some high temp BBQ paint, do you think that would help it last longer?
