Dizzy Very poor gas mileage, oil burning, and check engine light help?

Hello all! I'll give you the long story short. I bought a 2002 Saturn SL2 in July of 2012. It is an automatic with the 1.9L DOHC engine. I bought the car when it had roughly 95,500 miles on it. Since buying it, it has had various issues which resulted in brand new: rear struts, tie rod ends, valve cover gasket, EGR, wires, spark plugs, coolant, and fuel filter. I change my oil every 3000 miles or 3 months whichever comes first with Mobil 1 High mileage. One of the problems I have is the amount of oil my Saturn uses. I have read that these cars are known to burn oil. I just changed my oil at about 106,500 miles, it is now at just under 109,000 and I have had to add oil 4-5 times. One of those times I had to add an entire quart. Now just recently my gas mileage has dropped off significantly and just today my 'service engine soon' light came on. I keep track of my miles with my trip computer, and I checked it 2 days ago. I had only driven 177 miles and I already was at 1/4 tank of gas. I know gas mileage drops in the winter time (Ohio here) but it shouldn't of dropped that much. I started my car today and it ran fine with no problems, drove it about 5 miles and went through a drive-thru and headed back home. The car was already at operating temperature and then the 'service engine soon' light came on. The car runs fine even after the light came on so I am confused as to what the light is on for. I am almost to the point of just giving up on the car and getting something else! If anyone could offer any advice or common issues with these cars that would be great!

P.S. My car at idle vibrates pretty decent; enough to rattle the passenger headrest and items in the dash/glovebox. I am not sure if this is normal or not. Thanks!

I am far from one of the experts, but know they will all tell you to take to your FLAPS (auto parts store) and have them read the codes for you. Then post them here. It is the only way for anyone to have an idea of what is going on.
Also, that much vibration is engine mount. Probly the top. Easy to fix, hard to track the right part.

The oil usage is normal, You can try several ways to try and improve it but most of those ways have marginal outcomes some help some dont, As stated get your codes read at your local auto parts store and post those codes here, They do that service usually for free. Your vibration is most likely a worn out top engine mount.

While you are at the parts store pick up a fixed orifice PCV valve. Autozone # pcv 1009 DL, or AC Delco CV4000c, or Fram FV 410. This may help some for the oil consumption. Have you checked for oil leaks ? Pull the wires and look inside your spark plug wells for oil leaks in there also. At the rate you are using oil you do not need to change the M1 nearly so often, I would probably go 6,000 mile OCI or maybe even longer.

Saturn is a decent to very good little car but they are very "needy" and if you're not prepared with proper equipment and tools it can be a very expensive car to own. Oil burning is one of their known "issues" however to me oil burning as a "problem" is highly over rated unless it is a rental car which almost NEVER gets it's oil checked. Check your oil every time you get gas or every 300 miles. Never let it go more than 1/2 qt low. Your CE light is most likely minor since it is not flashing but post the code here. A new top motor mount may be in order. Factory is best but hard to find and spendy. I have found the local parts store ones satisfactory and they do carry life time warr. So if need be change it out under warranty.

I don't know about the later ones, but my '94/95 DOHCs aren't all that "needy"; I just have to keep an eye on the oil, everything else pretty much is peaceful.

there's the key - maintenance.

A lot of these cars are on their 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc. owners. Lots of times, they've been handed down to several kids. That means maintenance has been neglected or put off. Now it's catching up, with the current owner - you.

Once it's taken care of, and if you know how to do your own repairs or are willing to learn, these are very easy to own/fix cars.

My car was neglected enough to need a new timing chain. That was 60k miles ago, still running strong with the new chain.

Then, both axles broke (at different times). Total cost of repairs, about $65 including two used axles and tool purchase, plus several hours of my time (thanks again, OldNuc )

Well, I'm not quite proud of it, but I'm kind of lax on PM. My '94/95 SL2s really do seem to be intrinsically rugged. I've said before, 200K+ miles on a clutch and all three sons learned to drive with it; still doing fine. Really, oil and gas are all I check regularly, the rest I wait for symptoms to pop up, and they have been quite few.

Honestly when I got my Wagon it had 158K on it all original, When I bought it everything Saturns are known for had to be addressed, It ran cold the ECTS was cracked, The belt was bad, the Idler pulley was noisey, The bearing in the alternator was bad, Most of what we address on peoples cars when they come on here with a complaint or concern ive had to do with that car, My parents said last year that I bought a junker, Now they see it and cant believe it, I said its 13 years old with over 150K on it what do you expect things wear out and need to be replaced its a machine, The last owner didnt do it, I bought it and had to do it and it runs like new now. My 02 SL1 had 74K on it when I got it so I didnt have to do as much because it was earlier in its life. It was funny because when I bought the Wagon and im driving it home I could just tell by the way it felt what needed to be done.
