2008 AURA XR
Default 08 XR Code P0174 & P0171

I finally took my car to Auto zone to read the codes stored. My car has 122,000 miles and has been throwing the occasional check engine light for a few months now.

0174 fuel trim bank 2 condition. Probable causes are fuel pressure condition, MAF sensor fault, O2 sensor, fuel injector problem or leaking intake manifold gasket.

0171 Fuel trim bank 1. Same as above.

The car still runs smooth except when using heavy throttle in higher gears while merging onto the highway. It surges during this condition with or without the check engine light.

I'm assuming 02 sensors due to the mileage however; not sure if both the front and rear would fail at the same time. Has anyone else experienced these issues? I'm also wondering about the intake manifold gasket.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

i had a check engine light which onstar said was o2 sensor on my 07 xr at about 48k miles. dealer replaced it no charge. i did learn that the 3.6 has 4 o2 sensors.

Thanks,

I did the onstar diagnostic a few months ago and they cross referenced to a fuel injection issue or an intake manifold gasket.

ouch, I had no idea about the 4 o2 sensors.

Since you aren't complaining about rough idle, I want you to first try cleaning your MAF sensor if you haven't lately. It's very easy & may help. If no joy, then have it smoke tested to check for a leak..

At 122K your O2 sensors should be replaced as they get lazier with age (well who doesn't?) & fuel economy takes a hit. But that won't solve your current problem.

Greenman,

Thanks for the tip. I'll clean the MAF sensor this weekend. I have never cleaned it in this car. What type of cleaner do you recommend?

Even if the MAF sensor needs to be replaced, 122k is much better then the 38k I used to get out of the MAF sensors on my old L-Series cars.

I'll keep you posted.

Use MAF sensor cleaner spray. It is residue-free. Some electronic contact cleaners leave a residue.

Update:

I cleaned the MAF sensor 800 miles ago and am happy to report, no check engine light.

Thanks for the tip.
