Default ignition switch

So the dealership wants to charge 300 dollars and then some to replace the ignition switch in my wifes 03 ion 1. I took a look at where it goes and what it takes to replace and its pretty simple or so I thought at least untill o talked to the parts guy. He said the reason that the install was so expensive was that they had to reprogram the switch due to the passlock system. I read online and in my haynes that all reprogramming entails is turning the car on and off in ten minutes cycles.who is right? Thanks for your help.

the manual is, but you can degrease your old one and re grease it with an appropriate dielectric grease for the cost of the grease and not have to reprogram it.

So what you are saying is either way I need to remove the ignition switch. But if I want to replace it all it takes is the 10min on off procedure? Thanks again. And what kind of grease?

let me add a question about the reprogram procedure, when it says to put the key in the run position does that mean try to start it for 10 minutes?

No there isn't a battery that could stnd that . Just turn it to the run position with the engin off. Do not turn it to start.

But you wont have to reprogram anything if you just open the plastic switch and wipe off the old dirty grease. I did mine this christmass and havent had a problen since.

Is it fairly straightforward as how to take the switch apart and clean/replace grease once I get the switch out? Thanks.

So I just now took the switch apart. Cleaned the old grease off. Applied a very thin coating of new grease and reassembled and reinstalled the switch. The car started fine twice but now has the service car alert on the dash. I would think that this means that I do need a new switch. Thanks

So today I put in a new switch. Go thru the reprogramming procedure. Then when I try to start the car it half starts then says service vehicle. I am at a loss for what's going on. I did the procedure twice just in case and same result both times. Any ideas. Thanks

you wasted your money on the new switch, your car needs to clear the code before the message goes away.

you're welcome, I actually have two code scanning/clearing devices that also have other functions to make sure problems are real and confirm repairs.

I suppose I have to look at the fact that I only spent 35 dollars to find out all I needed was to spend nothing. Instead of the 300 the dealer wanted. Thanks again
