Dizzy Harmonic balancer

Is it possible for the crank shaft bearings to be so worn that crank shaft has to much play in it and allows the harmonic balancer to rub up aganst the engine block? I have a 1998 sl2 and am on my third harmomic balancer in about 4 months. The just keep breaking.

It would be the crankshaft thrust bearings. But you'd normally have some issues with the flywheel/flexplate hitting the block instead of the damper. Most of the crankshaft thrust forces push the crank forward (particularly with a manual trans), which wears the rear of the thrust bearing or crankshaft. You don't often find the front part of the bearing worn, though it's not impossible.
