Default What is the best timing chain replacement?...official saturn or an autozone special?

I am looking at replacing the timing chain in my 94' saturn sc1. Is there really any difference between a chain from a car parts store and one from a dealer?

Don't have the answer, but is there that much difference in the price? Check with Saturnparts.net or .com to get an idea.

I do have to admit that I am running a Cloyes chain from a rebuid kit in my '92. I don't have the kit number - sorry. It has 45,000 miles on it and no noises or problems are evident. If the Autozone chain is made by Cloyes, I'd recommend it.

I actually replaced my timging chain with an Autozone special before I found this forum. I did the full kit which is what I recommend you do. I'd say the chain looked okay, but the sprockets seemed kind of cheesy compared to the originals. If I had it to do over again, I'd go with a kit from Saturn. There's very little difference in price.

Go with the Saturn kit for sure.

The autozone one was 20 bucks and one on saturnparts.net is almost $50. One other question--would I be alright just replacing the timing chain itself, or is it important to use the kit?

Have you gotten your timing cover off yet?

I have a noisy timing chain, too, caused by a stuck tensioner. The normal repair is to install a full "kit": chain, guides, sprockets, and tensioner. The OEM kit for a '94 should also include a new oil pump cover to pick up a design change that occurred in '98, I believe.

Don't know your mileage or history, but my car has only 37,000 miles on a factory kit and the tensioner is stuck because of poor maintenance by the previous owner. I am trying to unstick it by cleaning engine internals, but this seems a lost cause. I'm seriously considering not doing the whole kit, but changing components on an as-needed basis, which may be just the guides if the tensioner can be cleaned outside the car. I'd compare the spring tension with a new tensioner, BTW, before reinstalling my old one. If the chain is too worn, I'd probably do the sprockets, too, so that would put me into a whole kit. I'd buy the SA Gear kit from Autozone after having a look at it.

I'd do the kit. For one thing, it's a PITA to do and you don't want to have to go back in there. Besides if a guide or tensioner breaks and winds up in your oil pan, you'll be swearing at yourself for not doing the whole kit.

The thing that everyone gets stuck on is getting the bolt off the end of the crankshaft. It's torqued at 159 ftlbs. This link has several different ways to do it. Take your pick.

I misspoke here. It's Advance Auto Parts that carries SA Gear. Very cheap, too, at about $139 for the whole kit IIRC.

If your car has never had a timing chain replacement, I'd do the whole shooting match. Mine is sort of an odd case with the low mileage on a dealer replacement.
