1999 SL1
1999 SL2
Default From the "Craigslist S-Series deal" thread

Thanks to a couple a of my member friends here in Canada, I am now the proud owner of a 99 SL2. AND... I stole it. The seller wanted $500. OBO.
We settled on $450.
I looked at it last Saturday, and although some of the clear coat was faded, the rest of the car is CLEAN. Like Bissel says : WE MEAN CLEAN!
I had my Son bring me there with a tow dolly we borrowed, for the first 50 Km.
After we dropped off the Dolly, I drove it home the other 130 KM.
I had him scan it (this Guy was no idiot, He just won't lower himself to the level of a Saturn. ) and it read a P0133. He cleared it, and it never came back, as often is the case. It drove nice and tight, tighter than the Lucky Car, which I have new LCA's and TRE's that I'm putting in on Sunday.
I babied it, becuase it was clear the car hadn't been driven for quite some time.
After about 20 minutes, I was left with no choice but to put my foot into her.
The Twin Cam didn't dissapoint, but the guy behind me wasn't amused. A NASTY Cloud of grey smoke came out. I never took it over 3K the rest of the way home. The cruise worked perfectly, and the suspension seemed tighter than on My SL1. The Air doesn't work, but I know I can fix that quick.
The PW ALL work, as do the PDL. It needs an ECTS as the gauge never even got past the 1/4 mark.
The Oil is Full, but isn't so clean. The tranny fluid doesn't look too bad, which means I'm a gonna change it! I'm busy wall to wall the next 2 days so
it looks like Fathers day is gonna be chock full of Saturn Fixin. I couldn't be happier.

Nope.
The SL1 reads just above 1/4 most times, unless I'm in Traffic. OE Stat.
It's the ECTS, and maybe the connector.

Wrong again Honey!
I chnaged the ECTS today and wouldn't you know it, the OE one was in there.
Although the crack was small, it's still a crack.
After 10 minutes of idling, temp is right at 3/8

Thanks Fun. I'm a gonna change the Oil, Filter, Trans fluid and filter before it sees the road again. I'd love to GET a 5 speed SL2 or SC2, but I don't have the space, or energy to do a swap in my gravel driveway. This TAAT works as well as the SL1, so I don't expect any trouble, I mean except the usual trouble from the Mrs.
I have to get it saftied THIS WEEK, because the rules change on friday, and they're making it impossible for cars over 5 years old to be saftied.

THAT is the brutal part. I mean yeah, the previous laws haven't been updated in 42 years so they didn't account for new technologies but still... ain't it a kick in the pants?

It really is. I've been so busy since we moved here, I hardly have time for it. Most of the shops down here want to change your brake lines because they look rusty.

the change to brass was made in mid to late model year 2001.

One the one hand, it's astounding to me that there are cars still out there with the old ECTS. OTOH, I can see some owners just living with it, after taking it to a local garage and the mechanics not being able to figure it out

How the hell was that car only $450?! Is it a bad oil burner? VERY high miles? Rusted sub-frame? Bad trans?

All power options, alloy wheels, near new tires (and Goodyear), super clean...that really was a steal.

Didn't burn any oil on the way Home...It's still full.
177,000 KILOMETRES, like 120.000 miles.
Sub frame looks Good.
Trans works great!

Haha...Thanks Brother, but 2 things. I'm cooling down on the buying vehicles for a bit. I'd had more than my fill trying to arrange for three ownership changes that have to happen by Thursday, and I'm not getting much in the way of co-operation.
And 2, I'm just not feelin' the 3rd Gens.

Well this may mean that there will suddenly be a bunch more parts cars on the market, and cheap!

http://www.autotrader.ca/newsfeature...ABhIHRev1Gw.97

People a) won`t want to spend the extra $$ for the actual inspection, knowing the car will probably fail anyways, and b) the price of scrap is so low now, the scrap yards are almost turning cars away.

I see a dedicated auto-cross car in my near future

Nice find Steve..
I would jump on that $850 SL2 but I also don't like 3rd gens much.
If I could find a real clean 96-99 with low miles and in clean shape, I would probably pick it up. I would have bought that for $450 and just manual swapped it :P
