Question CV Joint and Wheel Bearing questions

Can anyone confirm whether you can just replace the wheel bearings on a FWD vehicle versue having to replace the CV Joint? Are the bearings part of the CV joint assembly and need to be replaced as a unit? Is it more efficient or cost effective to do it a certain way?

I believe you need to replace the hub and bearing as one (actually this might just be true with the rear hubs), but the cv joint is separate.

No they are 2 completely seperate units. You take off the steering knuckle which contains the wheel bearings, leaving the CV shafts hanging which contain the outer and inner CV joints. You can change them seperately.

Hope this helps.

THis is true but if it has over 100K on it and the bearing is bad I would be very tempted to replace the half shaft too while it is apart because it would only add a few minutes to the job at most and save a possible headache later.
