Default BTSI question - 1998 Saturn SL2

All,

I am having the issue of the BTSI not allowing me out of park on cold days so I just took off the console and disconnected the arm coming out of the BTSI to the shifter.

Is there any reason this is a bad idea? The car seems to shift in and out of gear fine.

Thx

Something like Brake-Transmission-Shift-Interlock.

It's about as smart as removing the clutch safety switch on a 5spd. Won't cause problem's as long as you never, EVER, forget about having bypassed it.

I took the connector off the shifter and I can move the shifter but the car doesn't recognize it and stays in park so I reconnected it.

I guess I can disconnect the wires, huh?

I cannot seem to find a replacement part via the Internet and don't really want to go crawling through junkyards.

Any ideas? I know the cooler weather is coming up and I want to be able to shift out of park.

Thx

You should be able to disable it completely as a quick fix. You’ll have to remember to put your foot on the brake when coming out park and you’ll also be able to throw the car in reverse at any speed, but I doubt it will be a problem.

Thank goodness the legal community FINALLY got the auto industry on the stick with this world-saving device in the early '90s. For those old enough to remember the bad old days of the '70s and '80s, before the BTSI was invented, the meager little interlock between the shifter and the ignition key cylinder was the only thing keeping the civilized world from the rampaging ravages of runaway automatic transmissions laying waste to the land, leaving gory rivulets of sticky metallic-smelling pinkish-red fluid in their wake.

Life was hellish back then, thuggish autotrannies hanging out on street corners next to open barrels of burning god-knows-what, just waiting to ambush little old ladies and beat them about the head and neck with their own handbags. Fights would break out in bars over whether PRNDSL was superior to PRND32 or PRN(D)21, or floor vs. column shift. Crazed, shadowy men would loot auto supply stores at night, smashing out the windows just to grab and guzzle down a quart of their favorite brand of Type F. People would sponaneously combust, backing out of their driveways shifting from Park to Reverse without even the thought of the brake pedal entering their minds. Nowadays, people sleep peacefully at night, largely forgetting that they owe the sanity of their world to that BTSI little solenoid.

Are you sure you want to instigate a return to those dark ages, just for the convenience of being able to get your d@mn shifter out of Park when you want to actually drive your car? Do you want that on your conscience?

Oh, wait, what... none of that happened before the BTSI was introduced? Oh, um, sorry, wrong universe; never mind....

Did you check the brake switch for proper position? Do that first then test the solenoid.

Also look at this thread for a testing overview if needed. (post #2)
