Question Checking out TCM

I have a 2002 L300 that is giving me U2106 code, no communication with transmission. I suspect Transmission Control Module may be bad. What will happen if I R and R the suspected bad tcm with my 2001 L300 tcm as a test Or put the suspect 2002 tcm in the 2001 to see if it will duplicate error code? I know the years are not supposed to be mixed, but....I got to know. Thanks.
