Default Stainless Steel muffler, or maybe not....

1997 SL

Just bought a Walker stainless steel muffler off Rock Auto. Made in USA. It's the correct part no. To replace the rotted-out Walker I installed 4 years ago. And it's a southern car

Well, a magnet happily sticks to it.

I thought SS was non-magnetic?

So, it's:
not SS?
or it can be SS?

02 Haro MTB- can't kill it, still trying though

The Schofield Kid: Yeah, well, I guess they had it coming.
Will Munny: We all got it coming, kid.

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

Cheap stainless is magnetic (400 series). The high quality stainless (300 series) is not.

Most likely a 409 sst. So technically it is a sst. Magnetic. 409 is a ferritic sst with approx. 10.7 to 11.5 % chrome. An austenitic 304 sst exhaust like the Thermal has approx. 17.5 to 19.5 chrome, and 8 to 10.5, and up to 12% nickel for 304L.
I believe the Saturn SL's left the factory with 409 sst exhausts. Someone can correct me if I am wrong about the factory exhausts.

^ Way over my head with that info. I googled for info and one reply serves as backup to what's already stated. Magnetic and non-magnetic stainless steels can typically be grouped together based on the type of stainless steel. The following types of stainless steel are typically magnetic: Ferritic Stainless Steels such as grades 409, 430 and 439. Martensitic Stainless Steel such as grades 410, 420, 440........ Exhaust Materials - 304 vs. 409 Stainless Steel. ... 304 stainless steel contains a much higher percentage of chromium and nickel. This makes it much more resistant to rust. 409 stainless steel is still more rust-resistant than Aluminized Steel. However, neither type of metal is 100% rust-proof.

What is the difference between 304 and 409 stainless steel? From Summit Racing;

I had the same issue with a Walker SS muffler a while back on my '98 . . . got to thinking that it was due to a combination of different metals (muffler and strap) in constant contact (galvanic corrosion) combined with the road salt we have up here, plus condensation

On my next muffler, I used high-temp POR15 on both the Walker muffler and the strap, then coated both with high temp paint. My mufflers look very good, after the same amount of time or longer as the rotted one

Well I guess I'll go with it, since it's at my house.

The factory muffler lasted about 15 years maybe.
Next steel replacement about 3 years.
Next Walker SS replacement about 4 years.

A southern car, away from the salt gods.

Thank you for the information

My '99 has the original exhaust, nose to tail. I've owned it since new. The salt gods have had their way with it. My '98 appears to have the original exhaust. No way to know for certain.

How are you guys killing your stock exhausts?

Short haul driving.

Moisture doesn't get cooked out - and they rust from the inside out.

Te salt belt defiantly had its way with my old muffler. I don't know what brand it was, probably Walker.

Yes probably short trips. My 1997 SL has 197,000 miles. But, in the past few years, I have driven maybe 4-5,000 per year. Only 2,000 so far this year, the car set for almost 100 days while I fixed head gasket snafu.

From purchase in 1997 to 2008- I lived in the West. DRY.

Then on, down south. HUMID.
