2001 SC2
2002 SC2
Default New SC2 Saturn

I found this on Craigslist, I was just looking around and I always look to see what Saturns are up for sale. Well I come across this ad that says 2002 SC2 with 87K miles. I say wow! but I always have a Saturn and I'm happy, so I pass it on, then I keep repeating to myself, she's only got 87K yours has 298K, at least go take a look at it. So I do, fully loaded, right down to the side curtain airbags and the little grocery net in the trunk! And it was in perfect condition, everything, well except one thing, the A/C stinks of mold and mildew, I've done everything, I finally stuck a boroscope down the front on the inlet through the vents and while not black mold, it is dirty as all heck and has mold, at least from what I can see. but that is the only problem, oh and the sunroof does not work, no big deal. $1500 for all of this. It's like driving a completely new car. I didn't know the motors could be so quiet and smooth! Not even my first Saturn, a 2002 SL1 was this quiet and smooth and I bought that new!.Anyway I'm very happy! I've already moved in so excuse the mess!

I bought the opposite car. Black 5 speed. Working AC, no mold or stink. Everything else broken.

You can get a kit from the Sunroof doctor for you sunroof. It's a big job. I did it for both of my SC2s. You'll want to check the COO of the sunroof motor. If it says "Made in Mexico" replace it. 100% of those are defective. You'll want to find one made in Germany or Canada.

I had a mechanical engineer look at my two old sunroof motors. He said the hole in the center of the gears was less than perfectly round, which causes the teeth to wear at one spot. Both of mine had the same wear pattern.

If you need some rust to make it authentic, I'm willing to borrow it this winter.

The attached demo by Scotty Kilmer of an evaporator cleaner might be worth a try, or your could try taking the airbox apart and cleaning the heater core and evaporator, the drain, and the blower environment. Let us know how you get on.

You guys are hilarious!!! LOL!! Anyway after spending much of yesterday trying to figure out from Richpin's pictures if I could get into where the evaporator was I gave it a try today, removed all the ducting and the moved the heater core out of the way and I could see the evaporator and the stupid sponge/filter/pad or whatever you call it. I think that is the root of my problem. On a side note any harm in removing this?
I could slip my hand in the box enough, so I took some cleaner and cleaned the bottom of the evap box the best I could, made sure the drain was not blocked with my boroscpoe and then proceeded to clean the sponge and evap the best I could by satuating it with Lysol, rinsing it off with a super wet sponge and using a tootbrush to clean the evaporator fins the best I could.
I did get a lot of dirt out of there as evidenced by the water. I still have a perfumery smell, not Lysol, but a perfume smell coming out of the vents, I think the previous owner did something, but I don't know. I do know that now when I run the A/C and turn it off I don't get that disgusting smell like I used to, even after I cleaned the front side of the evaporator. So something is working, at least for now.
I think I am going to pick up some of that coil cleaner, take it all apart again and spray it on the evaporator and the box and let it sit. Then I will "rinse it all off with spray bottle or maybe a little hose with water. As long as the drain is clear I should not flood the car- Hopefully. But for now that's the plan.

That pad is there to prevent the condensate from blowing out the vents. If that one is clogged just replace it with a common home window unit intake open cell filter cut to fit, make new clips or recycle the old ones.

How do you get the old ones out? I tried pulling but the one I pulled on didn't budge, so I didn't want to do any damage to the evaporator core. I figured they would pop right out since I didn't see anything from the back side. TIA.

I bet the underside looks just a clean. And the front sub frame must look like it just left the factory. I looked up your average of 12.5 inches of rain per year. I should have taken a vacation to CA and drove back a rust free car. At $1500, that is a really good deal.

Yup, the underframe is just as clean also. Wait? You said we get 12.5 inches of rain a year? That must be typo!
