Default Which oil for engine break in?

2002 SC2 Manual

I'm about to have my engine rebuilt at a shop. What oil should I have them put in it? And how soon ought I to change out my oil afterwards?

Should I have them add anything to the oil?

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

I used Castrol 5W-30 and changed it at 3000 miles, IIRC.

Any API certified 5W-30 motor oil, and filter.
Look for the "sunburst" on the bottle
Change after an hour, get out the trash and crud from rebuild......

For example, STP conventional and STP blue filter from Autozone

Put in 5W-30 full synthetic, and a decent filter...
Run 500 miles, change...

After that, full synthetic 5W-30 and good filter
Normal oil change from here...

...
2002 Silver SL2, manual, 5th gear swap (.605), 80,000 miles, black badges,
205/60R15 "H" rated tires, 5mm spacers rear...
Mobil 1 ESP 0W-30, NAPA 41516...
NGK BKR6E-11 spark plugs

I just use the same oil as I am planning on running in it.

One thing about a fresh rebuild -

Check the oil in good light.

You don't need the panic I felt when I checked the oil after 50 miles and saw no oil on the dipstick.

In the gloom of the back garage - I couldn't see the oil - as it was so clean it was nearly invisible....

I forget about how clean the oil stayed after rebuild. That was cool. I debated doing a 5 or 500 mile oil change and decided that is what the filter is for.

If you built it correctly follow this.

After start.
-If engine running as expected continue to let it sit and idle while you inspect for leaks and other off normal behavior.
-Do not touch the gas!
-Allow to sit and idle until the fan cycles on and off twice.
-Shutdown engine and allow a 30 minute oil drain down time
-Replace the oil and oil filter with a WIX 51516XP or Mobil-1 209 filter and a name brand high quality synthetic blend oil. Valvoline works or Casterol.
-Drive car conservatively, no steady RPM operation and hold max top gear RPM to < ~3000 RPM
-Closely monitor oil level by parking in the exact same spot and checking level after a 6 hour minimum drain down time. Maintain oil level at the Full mark or up to the lower edge of the "U" in full.
-Once it has been established that oil consumption is zero change oil and filter.
-At this point using a high end 100% PAO synthetic oil is the best option.
