Just rolled over to 150K yesterday on my morning commute.

Original owners.

The car has served us well, returning great MPG for often very short commutes. It's been the "extra" car a few times, and has gone more than a month without being cranked at times.

Other than regular maintenance, the only things that failed were the power steering pump (seal only) which also resulted in a killed alternator, the shifter bushing, and the well known radiator cracks. We did have a noisy/notchy odometer that was replaced under warranty early in ownership.

The original ECTS was pulled out in 2007/2008 with over 100K miles and was working just fine.

Badge should be based on more than just miles. Years of ownership mean much more. Original owner means much more.

My proposed point system would be sort of like:

1 point per year.
1 point per 20K miles.

Hence
a 30 year old car with 200K miles would have 50 points.
a 15 year old car with 300K miles would have 30 points.
a 10 year old car with 500K miles would have 35 points.
a 10 year old car with 800K miles would have 50 points.

It is just as hard to keep a car for a long time (maybe harder) than it is to put miles on it.

I'm at 201K - picture taken in late December.
I would be at 23 points on my point system.

So your years is years of ownership rather than age of car, right? My car is 22 years old, but I've had it for 15 of those years. at 143K that would give me a score of 22.165.

Of course, if we wanted to nit-pick, one could also say that 20K city miles would be worth more than 20K highway miles, though I'm not sure how much.

Yeah, 'years of ownership'. The formula can start to get rather detailed for second and third car owners.
20k city miles are definitely harder than 20k highway miles - that is why I incorporated the number of years in the calculation. Just saying, giving out badges should be based on some sort of point system - instead of just miles on the odo.

No system is perfect.

That system makes a lot of sense to me. If we don't account for years of ownership and the miles we ourselves actually put on the cars, then you could buy your way into award badges/decals.

If Highmile sold his car to some young kid that would destroy it in short time, would the young kid still get credit for all the time Highmile maintained it properly?

Yeah, I figured you would have the most points of any active member. There may be one or two others out there with more points, but they are not active.

I'm thinking about starting a thread based on my point system.

Okay, not to throw a wrench in the system but here's a wrench.

Multiple S Series ownership spanning the years ...

92 SL2 MT, 5 yrs, 90,000 km (55923 mi) = 7.79 pts
93 SW2 AT, 13 yrs, 267,000 km (165906 mi) = 21.30 pts
01 SL1 MT, 6 yrs, 367,000 km (228043 mi) = 17.40 pts

Total member points = 46.49

...
1999 SL2 MT (287,130 km @ 10/2019)
2012 Ford Focus SEL HB MT

Looks like I'm an also-ran with a score of 21.5. 9 years owned and 250k miles.

I'm likely going to have to replace the cat to pass inspection this spring, as P0420 is active almost constantly now. As long as the car continues to get me where I'm going, I'll keep fixing any low dollar annoyances.

We can have a cumulative category AND individual car category. Hey, I actually owned previous Saturns.

For second, third, etc. owners, the variables would be:

month/year purchased and odometer reading at time of purchase. Odo readings from previous owner shouldn't carry over.

I'll do the calculations and keep track for everyone who posts:

1) month/year purchased
2) best guess odo reading at time of purchase (defaults to 0 for original owners)
3) latest odo reading.

Some of you already posted your 3 variables.

Can post a list (by ranking) twice or once a year.
Actually, lets say if you no longer own the car, you lose the points.

The intent of my suggestion was to give credit for members dedication to the S Series; either through past Saturns owned and sold/retired/unfortunate mishaps or multiple S Series owned and in the driveway.

While I've only owned my current SL1 for 6 years I was an early adopter in 1992 (year introduced to Canada) and I've owned a Saturn S Series since then with the exception of a dark period from 08/97 to 03/00.

06/92 - 08/97 SL2 MT, 0-90000 km, 90,000 km driven
03/00 - 03/13 SW2 AT, 150,000-267,000 km (purchase from parent), 117,000 km driven
10/08 - present SL1 MT, 297,000-367,000 km, 70,000 km driven

Total km driven = 277,000 (172,120 mi)
Total years of ownership = 20 years

Total points = 28.6?

...
1999 SL2 MT (287,130 km @ 10/2019)
2012 Ford Focus SEL HB MT
2011 Suburban LT
