Default How To...Remove Radio from 97 SW2

Okay, I did this last night. Took me about an hour, as I wanted to make sure that I did it properly and didn't break anything.

This is a step by step how-to.

Removing the radio from a 97 SW2 (applies to 1995-2002 model year)

Take your time and don't rush as removing these parts are fragile since the plastic is thin. If you rush, you run the risk of breaking something.

Before you begin, undo Negative Battery Cable.

1. Locate push pin "bolts" on each side of the center radio trim bezel.

2. GENTLY push in center of "bolt". It will push in and there will be a small pop of the pin. Do this for each side. Use a small flathead screwdriver and a pair of needle nose pliers to remove these from the sides of the Radio Bezel.

3. GENTLY push radio bezel rearward and lift. Remove electrical connection for 3 Button Switch (Trac Control/Defrost/Fog Light Switch) with small flathead screwdriver. Bezel should now be removed.

4. Locate two small 7MM bolts at top of radio housing. Undo the 7MM bolts; and locate D shaped Flat Metal push levers on each side of radio housing. Push in on D shaped push levers to pull radio out of housing.

5. Undo Electrical connection at back of radio (lower left side), and gently pull out antenna connection on right side.

Install is reverse of removal.
Check to make sure radio works before reinstalling radio bezel. If radio is in Loc mode or displays error message, you will need to call the 800 number that is referenced in other radio posts.

My "new" radio worked fine, and I didn't have any issues with it being locked or error codes.

If you are installing a replacement OEM factory radio as I did, installing another factory radio is plug and play, (95-99 model year radios will interchange with each other).

Pictures below showing removal of base AM/FM radio unit, and install of factory OEM Radio/CD Player. The unit that I installed was out of a 99 Saturn, into my 97SW2

Yup you got it. Factory to factory swaps are pretty easy. Only tricks with a swap to aftermarket are to buy a Metra mounting kit and get an adaptor for the antenna as the stock GM plug is slightly different in diameter to the aftermarket 'motorola' style connectors on the aftermarket radios and this results in poor connections and poor reception.

I did the same swap, but went for the cass.

I also pulled the wiring from a junkyard, a two foot cable that pigtails out a connection for the cd changer.

The connector at the end of the pigtail is a white 8mm x 4mm connector, the wires appear to be the same as the wires in the trunk that are for the cd changer. I also cut the trunk cd changer wire, got tired and couldn't trace the connector under the center console.

With the hopes of adding a MP3 player that feeds to the AUX (gm10-aux) will I have to splice the trunk wire into that white 8mm x 4mm connector? or will the 8mm x 4mm connector plug directly into some other P.I.E product?

I would have to think nobody would really want their MP3 player in the trunk.

Thanks,

Could this be moved to the How-To Section as a reference?

If it's not too much to ask Charlie.
