Default Diff pin questions

So yesterday was the first day I had my brand new kumho pa31's 205/50r15 in the rain. I did so without thinking I spun the tires just to see how good they gripped btw they did reasonably well. then I thought back to my 98 Saturn sl2 and how I blew a hole the size of basketball in the transmission. Soy question is this. I don't recall actively abusing my 98 I did dump the clutch at 2k probably 3 or 4 times in the time I had it but other than that wasn't mean to it . How common is this really ? How sensitive is it to tire spin? Will any kind of spinning hurt it such as in the snow or is it just on dry pavement?

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

IMO it's totally overblown.
I took a '94 MP2 5spd with 155k on it, beat the tar out of it in a modified '93 SL2 for ~15k miles with plenty of wheelspin in the snow then moved it to various other '93-'97 DOHC's putting another 20-30k miles on it. Only surface I was careful to NOT spin on was pavement. Also had unmolested 5spd's (at least by me) that I wasn't the nicest to but never blew a pin either.

My experience would say the same. Still it is a fun mod to do and it gives you the excuse to take the transmission apart.

I am going to inspect mine to see how it looks but is there a fluid that could be recommended. Might as well do a fluid Change while checking it.

amsoil torque drive had been the recommendation, don't know if that has changed. I've been using it.
I felt so much better after taking a peek at the diff pin.

Total luck of the draw, IMO. I've seen stories where the poster claims they've never spun the wheels or launched hard, were just cruising along the highway, and the diff pin decides to abandon ship.

Other folks beat the crap of them, often, and had no problems. A couple of the guys who raced mentioned this.

+1 on the Amsoil or the dex/merc compatible Castrol Transynd.
