OK, another employee was installing some kind of locking device on this Chevy step van.
I had a business appointment so left 'Larry' drilling away on an inside door panel.
About 3 hours later, I came back. 'Larry' was still in the same position, altho heavily sweating.
I said 'What's up, troubles?"
He says he has used up every drill bit he could find and still had not gotten even the first hole drilled through!
I thought I would give it a try.
Picked up the drill, pulled the trigger, and then I hit the switch & drilled just fine.
He had gone at it for 3 hours with the drill running in reverse.

A group of us were working on some stuff - and we saw a guy do that on his Camaro. The dude lost it, raged and took a Crescent wrench to the windshield and threw glass everywhere. He must have hit it 20 times, cussing like a sailor....

When he finished bashing, panting like he'd run a mile uphill, old Bob (resident smartass philosopher) broke the strained silence with "Well that oughta teach it".

Funny this should resurface. Just yesterday, someone from Idaho was in the wrong lane and I slowed way down to let them meander into the correct lane.

1). I put a 7 inch long scrape in my passenger door with a too-close snowblower.

2). I disassembled the seat belt unit to the point of flying springs (not heeding the warning sticker) and ruined it thinking that it was broken. Only to find out that these things are intelligently designed to lock up until you put them back in the car correctly.

Cool thread, I haven't read all the old entries yet.

One time I was up on my roof spraying hornets. Ran can 1 out and threw it over the side so I wouldn't have to cart it down the ladder. Dented the hood from the bottom of the can. Dent is still there today.

I have a couple stories; both involving our 93 SW2 AT.

When we were in the process of moving in 2001 I ran out to Starbucks to get some coffees early in the morning as the coffee maker was packed. They had filled the coffees so full that every bump and turn spit hot coffee onto the shifter/seat/console/leg (1st gen, no cup holders) through the hole in the dome lid. By the time I got to the new house I was somewhat aggravated and all out of sorts. With the car still running and in gear I flung open the door and stepped out with the 2 coffees in hand only to watch my car slowly drive away. The SW2 rammed into our 95 Altima and the house while I stood there with 2 piping hot coffees. A couple scraped bumpers but nothing too serious. Damaged both cars!

Around the same time line we were attending a family reunion with the SW2 and we decided to drive over to the local swimming hole for a swim with our very young daughter. I was seeking a nice shady spot to keep the car cool and in the process got myself wedged between 2 boulders (meant to keep people out). While I was able to get in, no matter how hard I tried I couldn't maneuver myself out without scraping the side of the right rear bumper just behind the wheel. In hind site I could have had someone press in on the bumper to clear the boulder and avoided the scrapes to the paint.

Coming up on my 1 year of owning my Saturn and I have so far been able to:

1) break the windshield changing out the wiper blades (dad's fault)
2) put a dent in the rear drivers side floorboard after jacking up the car in a rush to change my tire (dad fixed lol)

Definitely some great mechanic learning experiences this past year ha!

When our second kid was born, my wife could not get them to take a nap at the same time. At the time she was driving the Saturn which was only 4 years old. She would chuck them in the back, go driving around the back roads of Monroe and Easton, CT. They would sleep in the car. She was pulling down over 40 MPG consistently.

One evening I was in the garage making a clever roof for the family golf cart. I fabricated it out of 1/2" metal conduit. I had a piece leaning against something, and it fell over and smote the edge of the windshield. A mighty crack went all the way across. We swapped cars the next day so I could have it fixed in the lot at work. I was driving a 1991 manual transmission Ford Exploder. I never got it back, so the nap drive MPG went from 41 to 19.

Oooh, that reminds me, I did something similar. Wanted to back the car up just a bit towards the garage door, so I put it in neutral and sat in the front, pushing the car back with my left foot out the door. Door edge hit something, don't recall what, nicked the paint off the edge of the door.

Speaking of doors . . . shortly after getting my first Saturn, a silver SL2, wanted to replace the duct-taped, cracked, door panel and fender. Found a JY that was about an hour away, could stop there on a trip elsewhere so just a small detour on a trip we had already planned. They had pulled the parts and said they would be waiting in the office for pickup. Stopped in, examined the panels, paid and went on our way.

Got home, put on the new panels, and realized something was off.

Saturn had come out with a color, Silver Plum, which looks silver in certain lights, but with a purplish tint to it

I have owned dozens of vehicles, swapped hundreds of wiper blades.

And yep, plenty enough for a bare arm to break the glass.

It's not the dumbest thing I've done, but I did front brakes last weekend - just bought rotors and pads because I was having a hard time with the Advanced Auto's website I was trying to use. It was crashing a lot when I was trying to search or compare items (almost gave up and went to AutoZone's site instead).

So I decided not to try and add new guide pins once I managed to add rotors and pads to the cart. I've re-used pins before with no ill effect, even though on the Saturn they are a "should replace each time" item.

Did the driver's side. Lower pin felt a bit sticky and hard to put back in, but not terrible for now. Moved on to passenger side - lower guide pin would not go in at all. Nope, not happening no matter how hard I pulled/ pushed/ twisted. I even went so far as to see if my larges C-clamp (4") could press it in.

Fortunately, the clamp was too small (forcing stuff is a bad idea but it was late and I was tired) so I decided to call it quits and go to bed; finish in the morning. Was starting to regret not sticking with the crappy website and adding pins to my order.

Before hitting the sack, came on to saturnfans and checked out some old threads about guide pins for the brakes, came across one where OldNuc theorized that if someone had used a petroleum-based grease, it would swell the rubber and cause the lower pin to stick. Great, now I have a probable cause of the sticking, and I am thinking I should've ordered new boots, too, and might need to do that in the morning.

Next morning, I had a vague recollection of buying a pair of guide pins some time ago when they were on closeout or something at Rockauto. So, I went rummaging through my glovebox, which I never use.

After pulling out some bags of odds and ends (bag of fuses, bag of spare bulbs, etc), first thing I found was a bag with a complete set of rubber boots for the pins. Next, I pulled out not one, but two bags of guide pins. I had all the parts I needed in the car already to do it right. So, I replaced the passenger side lower boot and the lower pin went in smooth, like buttah.

This upcoming weekend, I will work on the driver side again and replace the driver side pins and boots.
