Default 2000 LS1 Dilemma

I have an LS1 4 door sedan with the 2.2L engine and standard transmission that has been my daily driver since 2006. The car has treated me really really well and has been everywhere from Florida to Yellowknife Canada and back to New Mexico, New Jersey and lots of time in Las Vegas. It has also done the trip to Cape May NJ 8 times from Winnipeg Canada.

Currently, it has 267,189 miles or 430,000 Kms or about a round trip to the moon.

Here is the kicker, it's been a solid car. It has never left me on the side of the road or needed anything substantial done to it. Basically Breaks, batteries, oil, and tires. I replaced the wiper motor last year and had a window broken about 2 years ago. I also did some alignment work and replaced some parts 4 years ago when I noticed the car was driving funny. I do take care of it, have flushed the coolant myself a few times. The air conditioning worked about 2 years ago and I know it can be fixed again.

The dilemma is today I have an alternator that's dead and someone smashed the rear passenger window, I have a blower motor that needs to be replaced. The heat shield under the muffler has broken away and now the trunk heats up way too much that I can't put anything in that spot and no parts car to steal another one from.

I can do all of this myself, the problem is parts and keeping the car reliable. I can't find anymore in the junkyard and none of the parts stores here in Canada stock parts for this car. The glass places can't order the glass for the window and I might need to get parts shipped in from Minneapolis.

The women at the parts store said in a funny voice " you now have a classic car "

If I sell the car it will get crushed almost right away and I can't do that to it.

If I keep it I will probably put 3 or 5 thousand to keep it reliable but I don't have space to just park it.

If I keep the car I will need to start making some more drastic conditions to make sure it's reliable.

I could sell it to someone who loves these cars, But It is not a showroom car and I don't think it ever will be.


And now I am stuck thinking of things I want to do but coming to terms that the car is getting older and I might lose a good friend who has taken me on many journeys.

Too bad Winnipeg is 1250 miles away, your car sound like a great donor for my 2000 LS1 with a broken timing chain. I know how involved it is but with a complete parts car I could build another nice stick shift car for one of my grandsons.

We had 2 of these cars. A 2002 L200 and a 2003 L300. The 2002 was an amazing value and didn't owe us a dime. We sold it almost 2 years ago with over 280k and it is still driving around. The 2003 v6 was a more enjoyable car to drive, but was more of a pain to maintain and do repairs on. We moved on because parts were getting harder to find and my wife wanted all wheel drive. My vote is to get rid of it and start a new chapter. Nothing wrong with letting it go as it will be more and more difficult to get parts.

We sunk $3K into the SL2 I bought new. Bring on another 20 years/200K miles.

Assuming rust doesn't get it.

Soulsurvives brings up some very good points. It really boils down to if you are willing to put the effort, time and $$$ into this car.

Take a look at http://www.car-part.com This site is great as it shows the location,contact information and many times the price of just about any used part you are looking for.

Once on the home page, you will see you can get very specific for what used parts you are looking for. I did a search for the glass you need and specified Canada. A bunch came up.

For rust free parts, do a search for the Junk yards in the South or Western US.

Used parts are out there. You just need to work at it to find them

Ha! Just did the same thing to an 86 Olds Calais my brother gave me last year [I first bought it in 94 with 21,000 miles on it].

Took it on a trip to and from Salt Lake City this month. It turned 130,000 miles during the 1750 mile total.

Too nice to junk, too good to give a Craig's List death sentence and after having owned a 63 Valiant for 38-39 years, I am aware parts are much easier to find than they were pre-internet. So I am not worried.

Thankfully an N body uses a lot of J Body parts, though.

Well, no...the car is returning to Earth from having reached the moon and that's still impressive! The experience you've had with your LS1 sounds quite similar to what I've had with mine.

I wish that it were reasonable to be able to ship wrecking yard parts from the US to Canada. Sadly, shipping things to anyone north of the border is minimally impractical due to the costs involved. I'd expect that Customs plays a part in this issue as well.

Would it be out of line to suggest that you take another 'journey' to get those parts, once you locate them in the nearby states? I read that you just need a used bill of sale because of taxes you may be required to pay when you cross back into Canada.

I bought a fender and had it shipped from a member in Canada. Was not horrible, but definitely more expensive than going to the local LKQ and pulling it myself. It was a rare color though.

In comparison, the "for profit" places in the US that had the right fender would have cost me about twice what I paid for the Canadian one.

Very cool! I found those other GM cars harder to work on than the S Series. We just rescued a $200 2000 Buick Century. It is pretty much a 1980's car with more crap added to it.

Your experience suggests that if the OP can get some assistance from those of us south of the border he might come out alright in overall cost savings. Since greater distances incur greater shipping costs it would be best if help came from states that are much closer to where he is.
