Default EGR Error Code P0401

I have a P0401 code problem on 1999 Saturn SL1. I am in Florida.

The sequence of events ...
Not sure if this is relevant ... I found I had a catalytic problem so had that replaced. The guy ask me if I wanted to just put a straight pipe alone and I said no because I was aware of some people having computer problems and thought I could avoid them so he offered to put in a catalytic converter he had laying on side. Total cost was $150. I don't put much mileage on car yearly so should last until end of century. No more catalytic problems. Car runs fine.

So after a couple days, I started getting the code problem. We took the EGR valve out, cleaned it and replaced the gasket then put back in. The valve was really dirty. So tried it again. Same error code. It's a seemingly benign problem ...

Any ideas on how to solve it ?

Warm up the car. Remove the EGR valve and start the engine briefly. It should rev to the limiter and blow carbon out of the port. You will also want to make sure the EGR valve is sufficiently clean.

Most likely the valve is shot. Best bet is a pick and pull yard that will let you bring back duds. Look for any 99 to 94 model Saturn with the same electric EGR. Go on 1/2 price day and pick one up. They are expensive new and are prone to be junk out of the box. Once replaced pull the PCM B fuse for a couple of minutes to get the PCM to reset the closed position value.
