Default Fuel Filter - Preventative or Wait?

Looking at the things to keep the satty running as long as possible...

I've never replaced the fuel filter, and it cranks on the 1st or 2nd turn usually. I found a really old thread that says it's recommended as much shorter intervals, but I bought it at 98k miles and now just passed 275k.

Should I wait till I start seeing symptoms? Or replace it when I have the chance at garage time? ('97 SC2)

With almost 200K on one filter, I'd change it. I don't remember exactly what the recommended OE interval was for changing it but I'm pretty sure it was under 100K.

It won't help your problem with having to turn the key twice to start the car but a clean filter will be a lot easier on the fuel pump.

I would replace it. I have yet to do mine as well. I think it is best to be safe than sorry.

The 97 and older is a 60,000 mile replace interval and they last considerably longer but, they also end up stuck in the piping if not changed periodically if the design is not corrosion proof.

You know, I've never had a problem that I could trace to a fuel filter, and I've only replaced fuel filters as preventative maintenance on a few cars.

That said, I'd replace the filter just because you have at least 177k on the old one, which is about 3 x the recommended interval. You got your money's worth out of the old one

Thanks for the replies! The satty actually starts on the first keyturn - I was referring to the 2nd turnover of the engine - which I think is still pretty good?

Any particular part or brand recommended? On Rockauto, I see hastings, acdelco, and Bosch. I also see Wix at my local Oreily's.

EDIT: Actually, found the WIX also at Rockauto - wasn't shown under the car listing itself, but you can manually find it under part #Wix 33575

Thanks!

I thought not, neither did I.

Yes, that is very good

Zeebins was talking about the well known issue that only affects 1997 models - fuel pressure decays quickly, so owners need to turn the key several times (while pressure builds) or turn the key to ON, wait a few seconds for pressure to build, then turn the key to START

Sounds like you have been lucky so far in that regard, or you or PO changed the fuel pump

The Wix brand is the recommended filter but I think that is 98+ where the regulator is built in.

There was a recall on the '97 fuel pump and that was changed out before I took ownership, but nothing's been done since. Count my lucky stars.

If you look under SC1, you'll see the Wix, but if you look under SC2, it doesn't show as a part. Weird.

When I did my fuel filter, I bought the Hastings one and I haven't had any problems with it. The 17 year old one I took out was a Fram filter though and that was the cheapest option listed on rock auto. (Or it was, doesn't seem to be there any more.) 97 and below doesn't seem to really care about what filter you put in, even if it's some cheap one.
