Default 2001 Saturn L300 - Steering issues

Hello Saturn enthusiasts,

While backing out of the driveway turning left, the steering wheel seemed to have way more play than usual. Normally it is much stiffer, but it became loose and I had to spin the wheel way more than often to get it to do what I wanted.

I do know that the stabilizer linkage is separated on the passenger side.

Any help much appreciated,
Thanks

There is also a thumping sound while turning the wheel to a certain degree.

One thing to note, it is tight and randomly I will get excessive play. It will be tight then loose then tight then loose.

Power steering fluid is clean with no metal shavings, it's filled up. I rocked the driver and passenger wheels on the left and right axis, where I noticed a loud clunk (Both sides made the noise). Further test driving the passenger wheel was not in line with the driver, it was also rubbing on the wheel well.

This noise is usually a indication of bad axle boot and you need to replair the axle with the torn boot on it. You have to lift the front up and look at the wheel well to see if it is the right or left shaft that has a broken boot. Normal straight driving you will not notice the sound til you start turning more to one side or the other.

So the frame was completely rusted through, I got it on a lift and I'm not sure it's even repairable.. Seems like too much work for what the car is worth.

His subframe is rotted out. The control arms can flap around because they are attached to it. If it is really bad the half shafts can pull out of the transmission. Been there, etc. The fix is to go to car-part.com and find a replacement. I paid about $300 for the frame and a bit more to install and align. Be prepared to get some weld repairs done to the replacement frame.

born again's idea is a good one. If you look around at Car-Part.com you can find these parts in various places across the USA. If I were you, I'd attempt to purchase one from a dry climate state in the Southwest or Pacific region, more specifically, Southern California since the climate is dryer here than in NorCal. Nevertheless, there are some very good prices for this item referred to here as the "engine cradle." Even with shipping charges it's conceivable that you could find one for less than $300.00 altogether and probably rust free as well. (The parts page link below assumes your car has an automatic transmission.)

If it's still worth it to you to hang on to the car for some time longer then don't give up on it just yet. You're not out of options.
