Default What Would It Cost to Repair This?

How much would it take to get this car in running shape? I don't care what it would look like. The guy says the radiator is fine, but the core support is bent (how do you fix that?). Nothing besides the body damage is wrong. The airbags did not blow. Could I get a body shop to straighten the core support and then me do the body panels?

I think it'd be a decent commuter car if I could get it highway safe (and for a lot less than he's asking). I have a set of OEM rims and tires I could put on and sell those rims.

Oh, and he said the car has an aftermarket exhaust and springs I think.

you're crazy if you buy that. There is a BIG risk that the frame on the car is bent. You just never know. You're also looking at $3K+ worth of damage there. That car is basically a writeoff. Not worth more than $300 IMHO.

Funny when I looked at the picture, for some reason I thought it looked like a Dodge avenger.

Yeah I wouldn't mess with that Spence.

Is that body shop cost, or do-it-yourself junkyard parts cost?

I wouldn't pay more than $500 for the car regardless. But it's the frame damage that might be the problem. The guy said they drove it home.

I have more photos but they don't show much.

I've had two front-end hit Saturns with bent upper radiator supports. One was fine, never gave me any collision-related problems in 30,000 miles. The other needed an extra hour labor at the alignment shop to get it in shape. It was good to me for 40,000 miles then gave me electrical problems like crazy due to damaged wires from the impact.

For reference, the cars were $650 for a 7 year old 92 SL1 114k, body parts on but unpainted and $400 for a 9 year old 93 SL1 144k with damaged hood, bumper, and fender.

I was quoted $2250 on the body work for my 93 including the parts. I ended up using my own junk parts and paid $500 from a different shop for the paint and installation.

I drove both cars with the bent radiator supports. The shop that quoted me the $2250 said it included either replacing or straightening the support, IIRC.

Body shop cost of course. You will take your chances in the junk yards finding the parts you need, and your time whatever that is worth. But would you really want to buy this off Ebay like this vs a local seller where you can inspect the car thoroughly? It's just a big risk that IMHO is not worth it. You can do a lot better starting with something else and adding on the extras. This seller is probably trying to get more money than his insurance is willing to pay him in a claim. I have always found decent saturns on craiglist locally that may have problems like a blown head or engine/trans/clutch issues that go for really cheap or you can talk the seller down because of what they have been quoted to fix it. I think those problems are a LOT easier and cheaper to fix than this.

Just my opinion of course.

Here's more photos.

Isn't the hood latch part of the core support?

And even though this is ebay, I would certainly have the right to refuse the car if I got there and it was not as expected. Also, his price is too high, so if we make a deal it probably will be after the auction is over.

It's only about a 4.5 hour drive. As for finding something locally, well, good luck to me. There aren't many Saturns around here, running or not. To my knowledge I'm the only one in my entire city that owns a VUE. I've never seen an ION QC in town. There are a few S-series around, though. I'm 2.5 hours from a Saturn reatiler, so not many people around here buy them.

There isn't a single Saturn listed in the Little Rock craigslist.

I did see this classified ad today: 1999 SC2, Green, sunroof, 2dr, 5 spd, 100k mi, beautiful car, 35mpg. $3,000obo. The price is too high though. I really don't want to spend more than $1,500 if I was to get something.

I just try to get myself into too many projects right now!

Wouldn't touch it. Aftermarket exhaust, springs, rims. That says it's a kid or some "performance enthusiast" to me. These aren't a performance car. Add to that a new clutch in 2004. The car only has 90,000 miles on it now. Say it had 70,000ish in 2004 - how badly did the rest of the car get raped if the clutch goes out that low.

Add to that unknown damage... The only thing I would buy this car for is parts, and not for anywhere near the asking price.

Finding a decent Saturn in good running shape for under $1500 is going to be nearly impossible unless you get a seller that has no clue what they're selling. Just spend the extra $1K and get something good rather than spending only $1500 and getting junk that you'll have to spend $1K on anyway to fix it.

There are literally dozens of S-series around $2-2.5K that are good cars. Look around.

Like others have said, that Saturn is wrecked beyond repair. You'd basically have to cut the entire front clip off the car and have a new one welded in place if you wanted it fixed the correct way, and that'd be over $2K when it's all said and done.
