2008 Astra XR
Default Astra XR3 Hatch freezing

Anyone have the problem where if the roads are wet or its raining that the rear hatch gets wet? My biggest problem is when it's wet and it sits over night and freezes shut and can't be opened until the ice melts. Just curious if I'm the only one. It goes in for a oil change tomorrow morning so I will be asking then also.

Are you going to ask them if water that's exposed to cold temperatures is capable of freezing, or just for suggestions on how to gain muscle mass so as to open it when it has ice on it?

Apply some silicone grease (sparingly) on the hatch seal. You can also use armour all or tire shine, it just won't last as long.

I lol'd to that one.

@00PowderSpecial: It hasn't been cold enough where I live for that to happen but I could see it happening. When I wash and dry my car there's always a lot of water that collects on the bumper right underneath the rear hatch door. hopefully Jet Sky's grease trick works.

What he said.
I had a few cars that would do that. Any type of silicone (Armour-All included) along the seals works. You may have re-apply once a week.

Why would this be a Astra issue? All my cars had the hatch/trunk/doors freeze when it gets cold. Sort of like the water on the ground does.

I would personally stay away from armour all. I do NOT use this on ANY part of my car. I used it for years and on my first car I purchased when I was younger, around the second year I noticed it was fading my cars interiors and almost making the interior panels hard instead of the soft texture it was, I guess like drying it up to the point where it felt like it was going to crack. I also used it on the trunk seals and not the door seals and the trunk seals crack, and I have never had the door seals crack.

This could be from other things, but I will NOT take a chance on armour all.

I use this stuff below on all my seals around once a month. I also use it on my interior, when my Astra goes in the show I specifically ask for them NOT TO CLEAN MY CAR inside or out! they look at me sooo weird but im very touchy about this.

You can find this stuff at crappy tire for around the same price as armour all and this is like sunscreen for your car!

I guess im kinda anal when it comes to my car but I spent alot of time detailing it and making it look the way she does for someone to go and clean my tires with a brush and then clean the car with the same brush (creates swirls in the paint). Ill actually post up the steps I took when I recieved the car for the first time. I actually didnt drive the car for 3 days and ill show ya why on another post

This just happened to me yesterday...well, sorta. It wasn't the seals that were frozen, but rather the latch itself that was frozen. I ran my XR3 through the car wash on Sunday, when it was around 35 degrees. Well, Monday it was -5 degrees, so the hatch latch froze...

Yes I know water freezes, but this is the first hatch that has ever completely frozen, and leaks water on the inside. I've had taurus wagons, escort wagons, suburbans, parents had full size chev van, dodge minivan, etc and the hatches have never leaked. I'm going to try some lube around the seal and see if that works.

I havent had a problem with this car yet, but my old hatch was a different story (89 Mercury Tracer).

First good freeze my driver door lock would NEVER work, always had to climb across the passenger seat. Different doors would always freeze shut at different time. Now with the rear hatch, sometimes the key lock would freeze and not turn, other times the latch would freeze up and would refuse to latch shut, and the pressure inside the gas shocks when it is really cold and refuse to keep the hatch up and it would come down on your head.

i have been using aerospace 303 for years. had go to detroit to purchase it until a couple of years ago. i use it on vinyl roof & seats, tires. amour-all is a water-based product. washes off easily. i use nothing on the dashboards. i clean them with a warm damp washcloth.
for the rubber weatherstrips around doors & hatches, i use silicone spray to preserve the rubber & to avoid freezing.

I haven't had your specific situation specifically happen. I'll have to keep an eye peeled.

The other day when it was chilly and rained I had about a 1/4 inch accumulation of ice blanketing the car. That really kept the hatching from opening, until the ice got all melty (but that happened to my Redline, SC1 and Escort as well)

Could of also happened if the latch got wet when the hatch was opened...

I am having the same problem with water leaking in and pooling in the spare tire well. Did your saturn dealer find a solution? My car has been at the dealership for 9 out of the 22 days I have owned the car with no resolution.

It shouldnt be hard for a garage to find a water ingress. Just rip out the interior panels and have a mechanic sit in the boot while another hoses it with water. Easy peasy.

I forgot to ask the dealer when I was there, everything is frozen now so it's not a problem. I have never looked in the spare tire well, but I think I will the next nice day.

I haven't had my hatch freeze shut, but here's something to watch out for:

When snow & slush run into the area along the top, where the hatch hinges are, it can freeze into a solid bar of ice that prevents the hatch from opening all the way.

I raise the hatch carefully and tap/bang/slide the ice out with my hand before allowing the hatch to raise fully.

I'm afraid I might bend something if I force it against the ice.
