Default Need Help PLZ!

Hello everyone. I just recently purchased a '99 Saturn SL2, A/C, Auto Trans, DOHC. It currently has 103,000 miles, it runs strong besides the fact it burns a little bit of oil in the number 4 cylinder. The problem is the passed couple of days the car would stall and die and I would have to coast it to the side of the road to try to restart it. It will do this at random, no particular situations. The worst was lastnight doing 80 on the freeway, ran great, acceleration was just fine, but out of nowhere it started to sputter and the RPMs started to drop so i through it in neutral and the RPMs dropped dramatically so I gave it the gas and it brought it back but I constantly had to play with the peddle to keep it alive but it did eventually die. I tried to start the car again, the engine would run for a few seconds then completely die. I let the car sit in the off position for about five minutes, started it up and stepped on the gas and it took off with no issues at all.

Does anybody have any idea what this could be. I just changed the engine and trans oil, regapped my plugs, checked all my wires.

Thanks,
Mike

Two things to check, the engine coolant temperature sensor (ECTS) and the crank position sensor (CPS). Use the Forum Jump below to find the How-to library about the ects and replace it if its the original one with the brass one. This will cure the flooding, running rich symptoms and maybe the stalling otherwise next is the cps check.

Pull the ignition wires off, after noting the firing order, and have someone crank the engine over while you observe for spark across the ignition coils. This will occur normally but if the stalling occurs do this immediately when the engine is already warm; most cps' fail intermittently from heat and kill the ignition so there won't be any spark when testing with a warm engine. No spark on the coils usually means the cps needs to be replaced. Buy it from any auto store stocking it. Its located above and behind the starter and mounted with one 10mm bolt. Be sure to seat it all the way into the hole before tightening the bolt.

Ill try that out, is there anything i have to do to swap the CPS with a new one or is it just remove and replace. I know the water temp is gonna spew coolant everywhere.

1-Let the engine cool down, remove the coolant cap for a moment and put it back on. Now the coolant pressure is relieved and won't piss out. Almost everyone doing this loses less than a few ounces of coolant.

2-Simple remove and replace for the cps. It may be oil soaked as its exposed to the crankshaft to detect the machined 'teeth' in order to generate the precise timing signals. No oil will drain out the hole.
