My 1997 sc2 manual with 230K miles started running pretty rough. I noticed the oil smells kinda fuelly. I changed the plugs about a year ago with autolites. I decided to go to autozone to get the codes read....said po340 po341 both pertaining to crank/cam position sensor. I just replaced the sensor with a saturn sensor a year ago. one guy from autozone said there are 2 cam sensors.
The other guy said there is only one. plugs got 1 year+15k miles on them. I think its the plugs what do you think? |

first thing first. there are no cam sensors on these engines. you think the autozone people would know this since they never sold one before. if they say they have one, buy it and sent it to me (i'll pay you back). i would love to see what it looks like.
the cam reference is done through the ign. module, and the 1-4 coil circuit. it's been talked about on this forum many times before. you are right to suspect your plugs, especially if you are using platinums. check your plugs, wires and coils for corrosion as they are the most likley culprit. since the plugs are out you might as well put in the stock ngk plugs. they work best |

Anytime you get p0340 or p0341, it could be three possibilities. Spark plugs, plug wires, or ignition coils. Sometimes the coil towers get corroded and cause this also. Check your plug wire resistance and coil towers. it is possible too the ground may be dirty on ignition module.

ouch,
I guess I will have autozone or whoever check out the battery / charging system. This is not turning out to be my day esp. if the alternator is bad....thats a lot of $$$. |

The problems may be unrelated, take them one at a time
The most important being the charging problem. If you need an alternator (likely), and you've done any work on automobiles, you might consider replacing it yourself. Its a bit of a pain since you have to do it from underneath, with the car on jackstands, but very doable, and the alternator itself is not that expensive. I think there's a DYI about it on here somewhere. Then if the engine is still running rough, try some of the fixes already mentioned here. Last the gas guage. Sometimes your level can change based on temperature and (I think) the effect it can have on tank pressure. So, it may not be a problem. However, if its very erratic, and was not erratic in the past, and seems to be getting worse... you'll need to check it out. Good luck. |

multiple problems:
bad bettery: replaced under warranty. BARELY made it to parts store...caused all kinds of weird electrical symptoms. bad alternator: according to autozone zero output. must now decide what to do...will start a new thread. |
