How smart would it be to replace just the burnt ground wire with a thicker gauge wire? Im not sure what caused the problem in the first place but i figure if the gauge is bigger than it will have less of a chance to burn again.

Replace the ignition switch as fast as you can. The next phase of this failure is to burn up all the wiring that goes to the switch. When replacing the switch be sure to very carefully inspect he connector and the wiring. The switch is not the lock cylinder, it is behind it on the column and held in place with 2 screws. Not hard to change. The connector plug has 8 spaces in it. There is no fuse that will stop the short circuit current flow when it occurs so I would remove the battery negative cable and go purchase a switch.
