Default timing chain replacement

i have a 93 sl2 with bolt ons and 66k miles. it runs well, but i was wondering when i need to replace the timing chain. in know it costs 800 bucks from the dealer, which i simply cannot pay. i think i can do it myself, but how much work does it involve? thanks for your input.

Seems a bit early at 66K miles. That's more like the interval for a rubber timing belt. Other threads I've read say more like 120K. Apparently you'll know when it needs replacing since it makes a lot of noise. I'm at 91K, and my car still runs well with no noise, so I'm hoping it lasts 300K like I was told by my salesman when I bought the car!

Anyways, go to page 2 of the Tech Talk board, and there's a thread started by kart43 called "timing chain replacement."

You will hear it if the timing chain in streching to it's furthest point, I always make the mistake of thinking the sound of the injectors tapping away is the timming chain, so don't worry. I had mine replaced at 135k and it was just at the right time, b/c the tensionor was out about an inch, i got lucky. Good luck.
