Default Saturn Sky Hardtop Coupe

A photoshop by a guy on a Regal board that I know... He does great work IMO.

I think this should be designed. I would love to see the Sky with a hardtop (preferrably removable).

that looks HOT. reminds me of the ferrari/porshe's of old where they had that "bullet" look to them w/ the long nose.

only thing i worry about is the aerodynamics if just the roof above the driver/passenger is what comes off and that rear part just sits there to catch air.

True, but that is why it is a photoshop... lol

I actually think he made this to be just a coupe... I do not think he photoshopped it to have a removable hardtop. Hell, just put a big sunroof on it and I would still be happy.

If the Sky came in a hardtop that modeled the soft top, I'd consider one later on.

That's a pretty sweet looking photochop, I gotta say. Honestly, I love the idea of the Lotus Exige, which is a hard-topped version of the Elise. Both are similar in size to the Sky, and similar in spirit, but way lighter and more purpose built for the track (and way more pricey).

When they made no noise at all about a hardtop option for the Sky, I was really disappointed. I suspect that they couldn't engineer a folding hard top, and that's too bad, but what I would really like to see is a coupe' version like that one, with a hatch, and a relatively large back window, and at least a small sunroof or removable hard top like the Corvette has. After all, the Sky is supposed to be the not-so-well-heeled-man's Corvette (I don't say "poor-man's 'vette cuz if you're poor, you aren't paying nearly 30k for a toy car like the Sky).

There are some aftermarket hard-tops you can buy for common ragtops, like the S2000 and Miatas that look really good. I hope someone comes up with one for the Sky. It would be a serious PITA to get the cloth top OUT, from what I can tell, as it wasn't exactly designed for easy removal. But, it would be nice to be able to head out with the hard top on for the journey, trunk filled to the brim with your weekend luggage for 2 and then leave the roof for topless driving when you know the weather will be nice. Bah... at that rate you might as well just get 2 motorcycles with saddle and tail bags. You'd have 4 wheels, probably as much or more power, just as much, if not more storage, and get 2x the gas mileage. Sorry, I'm rambling... trying to justify buying a 2 seater.

It's on a Solstice but you get the idea. Z0K is the Club Sport regular production order option

That is SWEEET!!! A normally aspirated 2.4 solstice + Hahn Racing turbo kit + hardtop seems like an almost irresistable calling....

The Sky would be a very nice looking car with a removable hardtop as well.

Cheers,

Only problem I see with that kit is that you can't open the trunk with the hardtop on. Other than that, I like the shape overall, but I don't really care for that back window so much. I know, it's a racing setup, not really intended for street use, but it demonstrates an interesting problem. The AFF-Buts on the cloth top pop up on springs when you want to open the trunk, IIRC. Implementing this on a hardtop is going to be nearly impossible. I would just like to see GM do a hard-top coupe' with a large hatch on the back, like the Mitsubishi Eclipse, and not a tiny trunk lid like on the G6 coupe'. Still, that roofline is pretty cool, a lot like the hardtop for the Honda S2000.

I wonder how much extra weight the trunk lid hinges could carry opening and closing?

could you imagine a lightweight (maybe carbon fiber) based hard top that is a single piece with the trunk lid. To open the trunk would be to open the top, but the top just hangs there attached on the trunk lid itself. If you can visualize that, you'd understand why it needs to be very very lightweight.

you'd have to develop an automatic latch for the top, so when you push the trunk release on the key fob, or the trunk release in the car, the top's latch would pop first to allow the trunk to open.

insane, I know.... but it's the only thing I can think of that would allow for an attractive hard top, and still allow functionality.

Although I think true functionality would be a hard top, that some how, some way, you could fold enough to stow in the trunk.

Who says it's not? I've heard talk of coupe (targa) for MY'08 or '09.
