Default The four L series in the driveway

I have four of these right now. The front one is my daily driver, the second is almost ready to sell. The third is the next project with a bad engine. The last one is just parts. Plus I have a shop full of parts from three other L series.

I like that picture very much! You're truly a committed L-Series man!!

Neither you nor I live in "road salting" parts of the country so I wonder, how well do you find the undercarriage of these bodies holding up where you are? Did you deal with any rust issues on the cars you've acquired?

Are these project cars which are meant to be sold profitable for you after all of the necessary work to make them road-worthy has been completed? Is there perhaps something of a "labor-of-love" present for you in such work?

My stick shift car is the only one of the 9 I have had that has any rust. The rust is very light on some of the suspension parts and brake parts. This car came from Spokane Wa. And probably ventured East a time or two in the 16 years before I got it. There is zero rust on any of the others.
I try to pay only a couple hundred dollars for a car with problems. I sold a Gold 2002 L200 that had 150,000 miles for $1750 and I drove it for a year after repairing the engine. I had about $1000 in the car plus my labor.
I will never get rich building these cars but I will keep my driver on the road for very little money. I have good running gear for an L300 just need to find a nice car with a broken belt. Most of the projects have been L61 cars.

Yes I have factory fog lights in my stick shift car. They are pretty much useless, I just run them with the headlights since I drive on two lane highways.

It's sad that the fog lights are "useless." How are they deficient?

On the 2002 and newer cars the only way to defeat the automatic running lights is to pull up on the parking brake. There are headlights on all the time, I can tell no difference in the light pattern with or without the fogs.

I have fog lights on my L300. My personal experience? Useless. I tend to think they're more for appearance than function. I've driven is light fog conditions where lighting made zero difference. While I don't have vast fog driving experience, I read and see news reports of Midwest snow dumps and the ensuing pile ups. All due to whiteout or blowing snow so severe, traction and visibility is down to basically driving blind. I'm sure every driver involved in these major pile ups never anticipated getting into any accident but they do. In whiteout daytime conditions, no amount of lighting can help if you can't see in front, side or rear. At night in the same conditions? My guess is any lighting bounces light back and creates more glare from reflected lighting. My fog lights are mounted so low they illuminate the ground in front of each fog light and nothing more. For L300 fog lights, they're more for appearance and useless. Each have 55 watt lamps. I'd rather turn on high beams if lighting can cut thru fog. In NYC weather, fog is rare - traffic usually warms up surrounding air for traffic to speed as if fog didn't exist. New Yorkers must drive and a little fog won't stop traffic except for the risk takers going way above safe speeds. I'm sure others will disagree, maybe because they're in fog country where it's more pronounced and supplemental lighting helps.

Question from one of the S Series faithful - if the belt fails is the motor toast or can it be rebuilt? I saw a local LW300 for sale with a bad timing belt for cheap and I was just wondering.

They can be repaired but if you have to pay a shop it costs way more than the car is worth. It will need both heads removed and almost all the valves replaced. I paid $400 for a nice leather car with new tires and it had a broken belt. The interior is in my stick shift car and the new tires went on one I sold last year. I dropped the cradle complete and kept it and the nice doors and plastic body parts.

Thanks - shop costs are not an issue for me.

So if I find two good junkyard heads I can bolt them on and go, or is a bigger rebuild in order?

You could just replace the valves and use the heads from the car most likely. Do check the sub frame for rust before you buy it though. I have non rusty sub frames but I live 1500 miles away.
