1998 SC2
Default “Wup Wup Wup” Noise Front Left

Yeah that’s right, LOL.

98SC2 5 speed.

Happens only from 30 mph to 60 mph.

Doesn’t matter if I’m cornering right, left, or going straight.
Doesn’t matter if the clutch is pushed in or not.
Doesn’t matter if I’m in 4th or 5th gear.
Doesn’t matter if I am accelerating or decelerating.
Doesn’t matter if the brake is pushed in or not.

Will stop for a couple seconds, or much longer, then come back.

Slight grinding sound with that wup-wup-wup noise.

Thoughts?? Thank you!

So you're saying it's a constant frequency. It doesn't get faster or slower, louder/softer, more/less intense with speed? Just a constant frequency and intensity from 30 to 60?

I can’t find anything flapping. There’s a grinding sound with it and it does change slightly with speed, but not much.

Experiment.
Jack up the front end and spin the tires.
Then, if nothing is noticed, put front end back down and jack up the rear end and spin the tires.
Even tho it is evident at 30+ mph, maybe something will show itself.

^ We be thinking similar thoughts.

Got up extra early before work, jacked up the front and took the tire off. Inspected everything and it looks OK.

Sanded the rust ring off all inner and outer rotor, including near the hub, sanded the wheel to rotor interfaces and put the tire back on.

The tire doesn’t shake up or down, or side to side.

Took it for a short drive and the noise is still there.

Noticed that if I sharply, violently, turn the wheel towards the right I get a grinding noise.

FYI recently the front axle was just replaced on the right side, and the tires rotated. Axle was from Detroit axle. Tires look pretty good for 40,000 miles and worn evenly. The mechanic noticed the “rear” disc inner dust guard rusted away & removed what was rusted away.

But the noise definitely seems like it’s from the front.

Sucks that I have to drive it 2 hours today. Ugh.

Hummm.......

Just tried something……

With the car down on all four tires, I put my foot on top of the tire and pushed in with pulsing motions.

I hear a knock-knock-knock.

Only happens on the front left.

Wheel Bearing (which was my original thought) ??

Grinding noise is a bearing. Wheel bearing is a popular choice.

Yeah, particularly not too long after an axle job and if they're original.

It's possible that it IS a progressive sound but you're not noticing it until it becomes a more steady amplified oscillation.

Having been through it several times the grind and the wump should have been a dead giveaway. I got fixated on it being constant.

Yesterday i asked my mechanic friend if he suggested any bearing manufacturers... SKF - Timken - Toyo Kogyo.
..............................................

I'm planning to inject some fresh grease beneath the CVJ boots on my axles, to delay replacement interval.
When i first put my '97 on the road (150kMi) i let my brother drive it (he drives hard). It came back 'ticking' uncontrollably as it cooled from critical; the CVJs clicked on turning until i got under the car and squeezed the boots to get some lube in the joints ... and then the joints were quiet until the car was abandoned at 230kMi.

YMMV, but I avoid Timken and stick to reliably sourced SKF these days.

I've found the provenance and quality of Timken to be COMPLETELY unreliable anymore. I used them and liked them in the past, but my recent quick failure bearings were Timken origin that wound actually up being F.A.G. Brazil factory pressed bearings in a Timken hub - they failed in less than 5000 miles.

The other Timken I ordered wound up being SKF Germany in a Timken Box and those have lasted 50k miles. If Timken is going to sell me SKF bearings, then why shouldn't i just buy them from SKF?

The Timken hub replacement were SKF -Spain and seem to be holding strong.

Counterfeits abound these days though, so be wary of buying from a sketchy source just to save $10.

SKF and proper preloading on axle reassembly. New nut and washer, Dorman sell them, wheel of of ground, wheel spun and torqued to spec as it rotates. This does require help to step on the brake as you draw it all up to spec in stages. The hub should also be replaced at the same time and radial and axil runout checked after assembly.

Thanks , Keblar and OldNuc…

I actually responded to my friend, that I thought Timken had outsourced production to China, and that the quality had suffered-- so I take what you say as confirmation that Timken = fubar (SAD)

It is not a China problem as much as a lack of good quality control. If you buy from one of the quality manufacturers like SKF then where it came from is not really an issue. There are very few sources for that front wheel bearing assembly so choices of source are limited.

Driver's side Wheel Bearing, Race & Hub replaced.

Race was LOCKED IN - Presses couldn't get it out. Finally used a Dremel to release pressure.

All good AND no more pulling to the right!
