Default 2002 SL2 automatic suddenly will not crank over

Ok, went the gas station(5minute drive) got a soft drink, in the store for a couple of minutes, tried to start the car and nothing, will not crank over, no noise from the starter. I have stereo, dash lights, head lights and dome light. Had to tow it home. Wife went out a couple of hours later and it started right up. Went out this morning and it did the same thing as it did at the gas station. Tried to jump start it and nothing, no clicking from starter or anything. I'm thinking maybe ignition switch or something that has to do with the ignition system.

The starter didn't give us no warning signs of going out. Any other suggestions from any Saturn experts out there would be great. This is our first saturn so I'm not samiliar with the car.

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

If mileage is over 120k and on the original starter, replace it. You can try a last ditch attempt to verify a worn out starter; bang the starter a few times with a piece of 2x4 - whether it starts or not, replace it.

Starters don't announce when they decide to fail. Familiarity with cars in general and experience with starters wearing out will tell you when a starter is failing. Mileage and a history of a car helps too.

The above is a short cut. The long way is to perform other tests to check the ignition switch, starting circuit, and using a 12v bulb or multimeter to measure at the starter. You can search for procedures. Either way will most likely arrive at a worn out starter.

REWARD EXCELLENCE!
