Default 03 Ion Blower Motor Resistor

Hi,
Ok, I think I have the standard blower motor resistor problem, that appears common with this model (03 Ion). I'm pretty sure the resistor is bad, but wanted some opinions.

Problem:
The inside fan only works on setting 4, and then it blows like it is on setting 1 (very slow). Fan settings 1-3 do not work.

I removed the motor (since it's easy to get to..figured I would start there), and noticed it's already been replaced by the previous owner (it had the metal ring with screws...no cutting required). I purchased the car with 30K on it. It now has 120K on it.

I hooked the motor up directly to the battery (ran some wires to the cig lighter), and it spun around without any problems. I figured the motor was ok.

I put it back.

I then pulled the resistor. With the fan setting on 4, I ran a wire across 2 of the female connectors, until the fan started. I got the run to run on what I think was an orange and brown wire (can't remember)...then were right next to each other, near one of the ends of the connector), and (with the control on setting 4) then fan will now run on full speed. I'm assuming those 2 will get 12volts to the fan.

So, now, with the resistor out, and the wire in place, I can at least turn the setting on 4, and get full air out of the vents, in this 100 degree heat.

I'm currently driving the car like this. Are there any problems I'm not aware of?

Does this sound like the resistor to you? I was going to pull the control panel, but that seemed more of a pain, than I wanted to go through, at the first attempt at fixing this.

So, the next question is:

a)Where can I buy a resistor from? No one seems to have one available. Any recommendations online?

b)Is is still possible it's the control panel, where the fan settings 1-4 are at?

Thanks!

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

I've seen this on a few cars (one non ion), and it was the resister. the resister can be bought at a dealership, and possibly rockauto's website.

Welcome to the Board.

It is the HVAC. The blower switch has gone bad internally. So far as I know they don't sell just the switch.

Where did you come up with this being a resistor problem, that appears common on the ION? ...... Yep it sure sounds to be the switch and it does seem you'll have to buy the HVAC control head. I do have to admit that none of the five IONs I've had have never had this so called common resistor problem, and I feel like I'm being left out.

I can loan you a hammer so that you can produce your own resister problem. Then you won't feel left out anymore.

I can just picture you standing there with the claws tucked under your scalp handle at a 45* from your head and blood running down your face. The ballpeen causes less bleeding.

search the forums for resistor, and you will see. Also, there is a bulletin on it. I figured it's easier (and cheaper) to start with the resistor than the controls. I thought I would start there.

If I pull the controls out, is it obvious what the problem might be (like a gap in contacts or something)? Or, maybe a good cleaning? Or is is a 99% chance, I just need to buy a new switch?

How hard is it to pull the switch? How does the dash come appart? I've read somewhere that you just pull on the vents, and the whole plastic part will pop off. I'm a little leary of something like that. I'd be afraid of breaking some plastic part, that won't go back into place.

Thanks!
