Default Digital CLuster swap..?

Can I put a later model (98-99) cluster in my 96? I want one of the ones that has electronic mileage and such. Mine rattles to hell. And doing some research, was why they went to the electronic. Regardless. I want an electronic one. Can I put one in my car without rewiring everything?

-Did they make white ones of these, too? I don't want to swap the inlays and screw up the needles or whatever.

The 99 homecomings had white digital gauges as well as the 10th anniversary SL2. Can't help with the main question though.

The stock white 2nd gen gauge's were on DOHC models, the speedometer and tachometer won't read correctly on a SOHC.

Not sure anyone's actually tried the swap yet to a '96 but it's been verified to work with '97's.

With the digital odometer you'd be stuck with whatever the reading is, unlike the mechanical odometer that takes maybe 10 minutes (and free unless you break something) to change the digital is far more intricate & costly.

...
The proper way to fix a S-Series automatic is to replace it with a 5spd O:)

okay, so no white, but my title already reads that my car has odo discrepancy. it reads 157,xxx and has about 228,xxx on it...

I'm just so sick of *raaaaaaaatle* when driving or something, nothing is loose in there but the stupid mileage counters.

If I recall correctly the switch to digital came mid-year of the 98 model run and the 98 and 99 digital gauge clusters would likely be compatible with the 96. The 99 Homecoming gauge cluster would likely be the only compatible white faced gauge cluster. A Vue or Torrent cluster might work - I can't recall which years they shared the same gauge clusters.

The 2000 and later models stored the mileage in the BCM and are definitely not compatible.

Although, I think you would lose your odometer reading and adopt the donor car mileage if you switched.

Read above, i added info in my current mileage.. vue clusters are gen 3, unfortunately..

Also, as stated above, wouldn't the reading be off if it were a DOHC cluster? (which were the only OEM white ones)

They do in 3rd gen; I run a DOHC 10th Anniversary Edition silver faced gauge cluster in my SOHC. The MPH and RPM readings are correct; the red line markings are not though (4500 vs 5500). Mind you the digital odometer reading is dim but I'm unsure if that is a compatibility issue or a fault in the gauge cluster.

Way to confuse the OP with useless information. 3rd gen's use a BCM for the brains for just about everything unlike 1st & 2nd gen, so they have many more swap options than earlier models.

'96-'99 have the potential to swap (DOHC->DOHC and SOHC->SOHC) while only '98/'99 to '97 has been verified to work (that I know of). '95 is unique to '95 for the majority of the electronics, not just the cluster.

Okay, so I have heard that dohc>single swap will work

I'm not worried about RPM readings because I drive an Autotragic.

Will a dohc gauge work in a single? I have you guys saying yes and no, I also have facebook telling me yes and no.

EDIT: mine's a 96, theoretically identical to 97

I apologize, those weren't my intentions. My point was that the 2nd Gen DOHC cluster swap into a 2nd Gen SOHC would likely work as it does in a 3rd Gen. I would think that the speed, rpms, fuel and temperature inbound data signals should be the same for both DOHC and SOHC. 2nd Gen behavior would likely be the same but it would have to be experimented with to be conclusive. Has it been attempted? I haven't seen any mention of it over my years here on this forum but maybe I over looked it. I've only owned 1st and 3rd Gen Saturns.

Don't know about year compatibilities, but I've heard of people printing out overlays on their home printers, then puting that on the gauges, after cutting out the various warning lights. I don't know where one would obtain the image to print though.

Exactly I think the only way to know for sure is to try it out yourself. in cases where it worked (or were off a few mph or whatever), we don't know if that's just due to calibration for that particular panel, or maybe someone swapped faces on that panel before the current owner got it.

Though, if you have given up on white-gauge faces, no reason you can't just use a SOHC panel

Personally, I think it will work, but that's just a guess and I don't want to waste your money. Here's a few threads at 6s that says it will work.

gotcha, was just saying, if the OP changes his mind, the white-face gauge files are around here somewhere

I saved off a copy of some photoshop files of white gauges, though they need to be reworked to get rid of some "extras" that whoever made them added. I can repost or email if desired (largest file is a little over 10mb)

Also saved off theRob's instructions for converting, which is good since theRob's site is gone.

So my BEST bet would be to get an SOHC cluster.. and put white gauges in?

If you want other than stock looking gauge's, and have a SOHC your ONLY option is getting SOHC overlays.

TheRob's printable overlays are for DOHC's (all the printable overlays I've seen are for the DOHC's), 99% of the mods are for DOHC's. Well, the fuel & coolant temp sections will work fine on the SOHC but otherwise nope.

1997 to 1999 clusters have been confirmed to swap fine, 1996 has not been confirmed as an additional year to the '97-'99 range and 1995 has been confirmed to be unique to 1995.

If you want to keep the mechanical odometer, these will work fine ('95-'97 SOHC): http://www.ebay.com/itm/1995-1996-Sa...-/380872282009

I'm not seeing actual '98-'99 SOHC overlays, just typical eBay idiots mislabeling everything.

The proper way to fix a S-Series automatic is to replace it with a 5spd O:)
