2000 SC2
Default Ion Loaner.

Well, I went and signed the paperwork today for my 2000 SC2. The guys at Saturn of Wichita East hooked me up with an Ion as a loaner. Nice, black Ion 2 with black paint, tinted windows, and nice rims. I was driving on the highway and the car (with only 43 miles, mind you) had a major loss of power and the check engine light came on! I couldn't believe it. I barely made it back to the retailer and they hooked me up with another Ion 2 with only two miles on it. So far I'm liking it. I don't like the steering wheel or the placement of the gauges, but that's really my only complaint. It's not a bad car.

It's probably just a bad part on the new Ion. I can't believe the retailers are just handing out new cars to drive. It would make more sense to rent them a car or send them out in a used car. Who's going to buy a new car with more than 10 miles on it?

Well considering that policy is that the car be driven 10 miles during PDI, a lot of people have to. Most cars on our lot have 15-100 miles on them.

I just got back from an extended drive in the Ion. I'm truly enjoying it. I was extremely surprised at how little leg room there is! In fact, I was shocked. My SW2 had more leg room than that. I say shave some room out of that trunk and dump it into legroom! Otherwise, great car.

Leg room in the back seat, that is. Sorry.

My Ion3 had 6 miles and I read about how you should avoid cars that have over 15 if they are being sold as new. I am sure the dealerships have different rules and expectations.

SinWagon- Congratulations on the new 2000 SC! I also agree about the leg room. Cutting 6 to 12 inches off the trunk space and adding it to the rear leg room would have made the Ion even more distinct. I would love that trade off in a second, even though I don't carry passengers that often.

If there is any way you could find out and tell us about what the dealership says about the Ion that failed and what the problem was I would appreciate it.

My own Ion is in the shop and I would love to collect as much information about failures or problems for my own knowledge and to be able to spread the word to other Ion owners. Failures like that are scary and of course a great concern.

Jaseball -- Whenever I go to pick up my SC2 I will ask about what happened with the Ion. I would be interested to know myself.

I can't remember the last car I bought with under 10 miles on it. They may put 10 miles on just inspecting, prepping it and taking it down the road to fill the gas tank. As many of us also buy cars from retailers with sister stores owned by the same parent company, cars often start at one retailer and are sold from another. Dealer exchanges among non-related stores add even more mileage. I am happy if any new car I buy has less than 100 miles on it.

The lack of rear seat leg room pushed me into an 03 Corolla.

I work at a saturn retailer, and I can tell you that some of the cars we get in we have to have test driven 3 or more times to be eligable for sale or certain money off to the customer.

Thats interesting the first time I test drove my 2001 SC2 it had 0 miles after I was done it had 20 and when I bought it it had 20 miles. My Grand Am however had more than 100 miles on it when I bought it....I dont remember exactly now how many but it was more than I should have allowed.

Maybe it's treated as 'Demo' car? Demo car is still sold as New but with price deduction on mileages used. It's around $0.4 per mile base.

Exactly White98SL2. Giving someone a new car and having them go through the first 100 miles doing who knows what to the car and treating it like a rental sure doesn't sound like a good idea to me.

Nothing mechanical is seated in properly and the abuse from someone "driving it like they stole it," for the first 100-150 miles is usually not going to show for quite some time, except maybe on premature brake wear/rotor damage, but the damage to the engine and tranny may not show at all for awhile.

One of the best aspects of buying new is knowing the car was in your hands and care from day one and you know what repairs, service, and driving conditions it has gone through. I don't consider anything with more than 15 miles on it new, but this is just personal preference.

If my dealer had no cars without 50-150 miles on the cars they sold as new I'd just find a different dealer and let other people with no concerns buy the others.

Now, I am a bit 2 sided to this. I do drive cars off the lot at work all of the time, but that's what I am told to do if I need to go somewhere. I don't beat on the cars at all, and try to drive them gently. However, my VUE was delivered with 2 miles on the odo... and I intend to get every new car like that.

'demo' as in demolition?
i recall my 92 sc had 10-20 miles on it new. no biggie. i put 182,000 on it myself. my now 96 sc2 was certified used with 51,000 on it. the warranty took care of everything that i managed to break before 75,000 miles. now it's got 130,000 on it.
