Default Options on "un"modding

OK, the SW1 I bought has a set of hubcaps for it that were in the back, but the idiot painted them red (the car is green!!), is there any way to get the paint off, or should I just go and get a can of spray bomb and paint them back to a stock colour.

you could get some spray on paint remover, then scrape off the paint. I'm not sure what that would do to hubcaps because I've never had hubcaps. I used clear-coat remover on some alloy wheels and it came out fine.

Hubcaps have gotta be cheap at a JY. Just try to find 4 matching ones that will look good. Probably run you cheaper, as well as not waste time.

you can sand blast them. it should strip off everything down to the plastic. then, you can clean them up and spray them a more stock color...

It's surely not worth trying to get it off. Just get new ones, or spray 'em back to grey. OR go without hubcaps and tell everyone they are your winter wheels.

Leave the caps off and upgrade to alloys when the time comes to replace tires. My Sawtooths cost me $36. I;m sure you can find a decent set of 4X100s for under $100. It would be a lot nicer than steelies with covers.

Not likely in the Great White North Not for that cheap. $100/each used minimum, unless you just get lucky. Sometimes, that happens, not often.

Huh? I've seen whole cars sell for less then that. They should be dirt cheap at a junkyard.

Up here in Canada any car that makes it to the scraper with its aluminum wheels is rare and if they do they are thrashed. in rare cases they are not a complete set or the guy wants an arm and a leg.

Use the steelies for the winter and the OE alloys for the summer or just rattle can the caps back to an acceptable colour

Cheap and junkyard don't often go together in the same sentance around here for anything that people might want. Factory radios and factory aluminum wheels especially.

I fully agree with the above, getting anything that might have any value here in Canada is very rare to be cheap, a good set of used alloys sometimes go for as much as a set of cheap new universal alloys.

Yes, I spend about $100 for used sets of alloys from the junkyard, but that is cheaper than new steel wheels. If you do visit the junkyard you can also grab pre-1992 BMW 3-series (318/325) or VW wheels--both bolt up fine to the S-series.

I'd have to go to one in Michigan, because if one around here did have a set, especially off the Benz, I could expect to pay at least $100-200/wheel with no rubber.
