Default EGR Valve Cleaning - HELP!

My car has been having some idling problems, and we finally figured out it was the intake manifold gasket (Looks like it was installed all nice and wrinkly). So we've got everything out of my car and I was going to get down to the business of cleaning out my EGR Valve.

It is absolutely caked in carbon! I was wondering if anyone has some good tips on how to get a completely encrusted EGR valve clean, what products you use and any tips/techniques that work for you. This it the first time I've tried cleaning it so any help would be appreciated.

THANKS!

Lessee dental type picks and compressed air, sea foam or deep creep (Same thing just sprayable.), carb cleaner, brake cleaner. All of those have been used by different people on here with some success. While you've got it off, you can run the engine for 10 or 15 seconds (It'll run like crap.) to blow the carbon out ofthe passages.

I will be completely honest with you, I have taken it off and cleaned it a couple of times with different cleaners, but it never fixed it. I had a local shop to an engine treatment that is to help increase fuel mileage and clean out the deposits in the engine (and EGR supposedly). The EGR still set off the SAS light, but the engine runs a lot better after the cleaning. I got tired of the headache and just went and got a new part from Saturn for $160 and have had no problems since then.

Thanks for all the tips. The EGR isn't the problem, I was just hoping that by cleaning it I would be able to postpone replacing it for just a little while longer.

Yes cleaning is good for it. The solenoid will prefer if the pintle is free moving, then it won't draw as much current and burn itself out. Eventually the solenoid will get weak and not be able to budge against even small chunks of carbon... then it's $160 replacement time.

Anything that can depress the pintle-- even a pencil-- will work great. Fill the valve up through its open hole with the solvent of your choice then depress the pintle and let that solvent trickle out the pintle hole.

Thanks! the pintle is free moving and most of the carbon is removed. Now to see if I can do better job of installing an intake manifold gasket than saturn!
Cheers!
