Key stuck/car keeps running

2007 ion 2,keys stuck in the ignition and car keeps running even in the off position. Nothing we have tried will remove key. Stopped car from running by removing what I think is the alternator fuse. Disconnecting battery and reconnecting did not work. Can not locate the manual. What else can I try ?

If your car has an automatic transmission, there should be a small panel on the underside of the steering column. Open it and press a button inside, which is supposed to release the ignition key. Ions with manual transmissions don't have this release button.

You may have to replace two parts, a worn lock cylinder and ignition switch. The lock cylinder that holds the key and the ignition switch if it does not kill the engine. Usually worn ignition keys replaced with ones made from a GM dealer correct ignition key issues before a lock cylinder is replaced. Why the engine wasn't killed by turning off the ignition switch may be from internal damage to the switch.

Once the ignition switch is replaced, a Passlock 30-minute procedure will be needed otherwise the engine won't start. Passlock uses the ignition switch as part of GM's theft deterrent system. If the procedure is not done then Passlock will detect this new switch incorrectly and disable the starter - no engine running possible.

Put your finger in that dark opening that you cant see inside of, wiggle it around till you feal something move, then pull out. Repeat as needed.

Also buy two new keys so you done with it.

Hey,

Just had this happen for the SECOND TIME in a year. Very steamed about this as it cost me $550 last time.

Hopefully this can be resolved with some lubricant and new keys.

FYI - If the dealer fixes this for you... They should be using warrantied parts, but I think the warranty is only 1 year, 12,000 miles.
