Default Rebuilt the Alternator

95 SW2 193,000 miles and my alternator still worked but had a noisy bearing and was making noise on the radio. I ordered the $29 ebay kit with new bearings, rectifier, voltage regulator, and brushes and rebuilt the alternator today. Took it to autozone when finished and had them test it just to be safe.

One thing that went wrong during the rebuild was one of the 3 long external casing bolts broke and I had to drill it out and put in a bigger bolt with a nut. No big deal but it was an undesirable setback.

Overall it was quite simple. I would say it is a one hour project if nothings goes wrong (like my broken bolt). I learned a lot about alternators, their parts, and how they work.

Made videos of the project to share if interested...

Nice!!

If I can only get a little warning (maybe I should say "when I notice a warning ") when these things start to fail I may try this.

+1 for the How-To Library. I want to know where this is at whenever I need to rebuild an alternator.

+1 again on that, handy info to have, and good instructions are always nice to come by in general

I agree with Henry Ford on automotive color options. I'll paint it any color you like, as long as it's black.

Awesome! I've been considering this as an alternative to buying new or paying someone to rebuild my alternator. (I have three near-dead ones, one being on the car. Lol.) Thanks very much for sharing!

FYI, over a year and about 15,000 miles the rebuilt alternator is still running strong.

1-He made the work easier, something I don't often do.

I'd be afraid to use them also for car repairs.
