2002 SL2
Default fuel economy, range , fuel gauge accuracy

What are you getting for fuel economy on your Saturn? I am new to this 02 SL2 automatic with 62k orig miles. The last tank was around 20 mpg w 60/40 city/ hwy. The PO kept extensive mpg records since new and it had 38 mpg tanks all hwy for highs to lows of 19 mpg city driving.

I I filled it up 2 weeks ago for the first time (let the pump click off automatically w/o filling it to the brim). At 180 miles, fuel gauge needle is just a hair under 1/4. Is that about right?

Where is the needle when the low fuel symbol comes on? With 12.1 gal tank, @ 20 mpg, it looks like I need to go to a gas station at around 230 miles or risk running out of fuel!

In contrast, my 92 VW diesel has a 14.5 gal tank and gets 43 mpg hwy. I typically go fill up at the 500 mile mark.

Did Saturn purposely make the tank so small to force you go to the gas station more often to check the oil?

The low fuel light is supposed to come on with 1 1/2 - 2 gallons reaming, that has been to be in serious error though so YOU get to test it out. Mine comes on at 0.75 gallon FYI.

City stop and go will be in the 19-22 gallon range on 87 octane NO alcohol and a gallon lower with alcohol gas. You will get 35-36 on the highway with the 87 alcohol gas.

Yeah, I thought the tank on my '93 was tiny at 12.8 gallons.

Being in NYC I would reckon there is a lot of idling going on. When possible drive at low traffic density times. Find opportunities to take alternative routes like expressways etc. Using navigation apps can reroute you around traffic snarls/congestion.

Is your vehicle running at full temperature? It has been years since the last time I got 20 mpg in an S-series.

My low fuel light does not work verified by running out of gas on the interstate. Last few fills were 11.xx gallons, never saw a low fuel light. I put fuel injector cleaner In every fill, no joy. I think the 3rd gens might be more reliable though.

My low gas light has always come on with a little more than 2 gallons left in the tank. I've had it come on a few times but I've never put in more than 10.5. Definitely doesn't seem normal but I'd rather have it come on too early than too late.

You think 12 gallons is small??

My 61 HD Sportster only had a 1.9 gallon tank. Of course the bars weren't that far apart and the bike shook your kidneys so much you needed to stop and take a leak anyway...

So it all worked out...

The fuel gauge in our cars are not very accurate, it just gives you a general idea of how much gas you have left.

Theoretically, I should be getting 1 mpg more in my 3rd gen coupe than my 2nd gen sedan.

In reality, I drive the cars a little differently.

For the 4 speed automatic, I would try Mobil 1 AFE in 0W-30...

I am running a similar Mobil 1 ESP in 0W-30, and getting 40+ with a manual transmission...
