The only Saturns that had Polymer panels were those that were built in Spring Hill Tennessee; which includes: All S-Series, ION, and First Gen VUE.

Everything else that was built that had the Saturn badge on it had Steel panels.
The front fenders, front fascia, rear fascia and the doors were polymer. Basically it was stuff that could be bolted on to an existing steel car body. Hoods, roofs and trunk lids of all Saturns have always been steel.

This is probably the funniest thing I've read in the last few days.
Where the H311 are you getting out of your car, do you know how silly your comment sounds? I personaly don't get out in the middle of an interstate to put my top up/down.

My guess is, either you get into your car while it's parked in your garage, then never leave it, until you get to work, where you have a private parking space - inside a bunker. OR, your just making an excuse of some sort because you just need to find fault with what is otherwise a great car.

So when it starts to rain, you just keep driving, yourself and the interior and its electronics getting soaked, until you reach the next exit? Okay. Is that what you'd also recommend to those who "should lose weight"?

A sure sign of an argument being lost is when it's turned, pointlessly, into a personal comment (esp. one that has no basis in reality on one of the people discussing it. Personally, I don't give a rat's @$$ how good a car the Sky is; it may well be a better car than the Miata. That should be evident in the conspicuous absence of any attempt to "find fault" with either car. That, of course, is irrelevant. My point, for those to whom it wasn't painfully obvious, is that "you need to lose weight" is a lousy argument for having a convertible top that requires you to exit the vehicle.

To address your pointless personal speculation, I've never had a garage, let alone an attached one. Anyone who's read my posts on the S-Series forums knows I work on my car in a gravel driveway. I drive apprx. once a week. I walk or bicycle to work most days. That, of course, is also irrelevant. A convertible top that can be operated without exiting the vehicle is safer, irrespective of who's driving it, or of who's stating it.

1. If it looks like it might rain, I will not take the top down in first place. - If I do have it down, and I'm driving, and it looks as though it might rain, I will pull over SOMEWHERE SAFE, and put the top down. AND, if in the unlikly circumstance it immediatly starts to down pour unexpectadly - I would STILL find a safe place to pull over wet interior or not, the elecronics would be fine, unless left in rain for a period of time long enough to allow it to pool, again - very unlikely.

2. Get over the "overweight" comment - it was meant sarcasticly to imply that complaining about having to get out of the car was just lazy.

3. The manual top is an extremely minor inconvenience and nothing else. Stop making the argument that it's more dangerous, that's silly, it's like saying running is more dangerous than walking as your more likely to stumble, and therefor you should never do it. You walk or ride a bike - also more dangerous than staying in a car, but who cares! It's such a horendously minor distinction - it should not even be used as an argument.

4. "argument being lost" - ? Not likely, your argument is based on the insane speculation that stepping out of the car is dangerous. Being the type of person to get out to put the top up in a dangerous area - is dangerous. In other words - the act is safe, the person doing it determines weather or not it stays that way.

5. "That should be evident in the conspicuous absence of any attempt to "find fault" with either car. That, of course, is irrelevant" - this made no sence to me. :-P

6."My point, for those to whom it wasn't painfully obvious, is that "you need to lose weight" is a lousy argument for having a convertible top that requires you to exit the vehicle" - Umm, not really - you mentioned that, but most of "Your point" involved "the danger of exiting yout vehicle"

Listen - You love Saturns, I love Saturns - Let's just agree to disagree, and stop this nonsence - Well, after your reply anyways - I'll give you that much :-)

The BRA has been selling since 1898 - But that still doesn't mean that I want one.

The Miata is a great car - But c'mon, it's a chick car! I wouldn't be caught dead driving one, but I agree, it's a good car - for woman who want a stylish well made car.

It is kinda weird that the back 1/4 panels are steel. But the fronts are polymer.

I thought the car was pretty decent. Stick shift. It handled well. Was comfortable on long trips. And pretty decent mileage (28-30 mpg overall. 35 mpg high)

I bought it new with a GM supplier discount, 0% interest, and 100k warranty.
It did have it's share of woes. Steering rack, 2 BCM's, & A/C leak. But the warranty covered it all. So I'm not complaining

My son uses it as daily driver now & has over 116k on the original clutch.

On conventional unibody cars, the quarter panels (rear) are welded into (well, technically they're _part of_) the unibody (and often incorporated into the roof), and the fenders (front) are bolted on. It sounds like the L is really just a unibody car that happens to have polymer fenders and bolt-on door panels, rather than a true spaceframe with all removeable body panels.

True...thus...the beginning of the end.

(Yes, polymer is still a big deal for me, unfortunately other than the Smart and to a different extent, the Corvette, there are only steel paneled cars. IMO as soon as GM/Saturn started pushing steel bodied rebadges, that is when Saturn died.)

There are aluminum Ferraris and are (or were) aluminum Jags. Maybe others too, but you are right, most cars have steel bodies.
The L seems weird with its polymer doors and front fenders, but it's taken many hits and dings without any damage

Polymer could have been a big deal, but the truth is, an old beat up Saturn still looks like any old beat up car so any advantage the polymer had as far as no dents or less rust is negligible.
