Default Alternative Replacement Tire Size For '04 R/L

I have read the previous strings on replacement tire sizes and I only see one person stating that they have replaced the OEM 245-50-18's with 245-55-18's. Like many other Red Line Vue owners I do not want to pay $250 to $300 per tire just because it happens to be the same size as the replacement tire for a BMW. Is there more than one person out there that has installed 245-55-18's on a 2004 Red Line? If so, please let me know if you have had any problems with the larger tire size or if the larger tire works out just fine. By the way, the original equipment Turanza's have lasted 53,000 miles on my Vue and have never been good in the snow, although I just chalked up the poor performance to the large foot print of the tire.

Here are the pics I promised. Like I suspected, the spedometer is dead on (confirmed by GPS). The noise is also reduced...this could be due to the slightly narrower tread profile, or the new tread design. I am really happy on my decision, and hope this helps other members spend less money on their Redline replacement tires. Again, this size is 225/55-18.

Thanks for the photos. Without inspecting my car to compare, I can't tell the difference in the tire size.

The Bridgestone EL42 that your car has is, as far as I can tell, the exact same tire as that BMW tire. Looks like GM borrowed from the BMW parts bin for that one.

The new RL's come with a Bridgestone EL400 instead of the EL42. They're a very reasonable $159 on tirerack.

I just ordered a set of 225/55-18 for our Redline. The diameter is nearly identicle (0.37% difference). Rim width will also be fine. The slightly narrower tire should yield better snow/rain traction as well as slightly better fuel mileage. The same sidewall height should retain the quicker steering you get with the Redline. You can get the Pirelli P6 in this size on tire rack for $85 each. I bought some Yokohamas from discounttiredirect for $125 shipped. I will post some pics when I get them installed later this week.

Well I decided to go with the Toyo's to save from the OEM costs ($679 shipped) and stay with the stock tire size. We'll see how they compare to the Turanzas after their 40k and we can all compare notes for our 3rd sets.

Since I live in VA we get a little of all season but I'm not up for dealing with both summer & winter tires.

I'll let ya'll know how then pan out after I break them in <g>

We needed a better all-season tire for our RL. I have a 500' driveway that elevates by about 10' at the end to meet the road. A good Minnesota snowfall rendered the stock tires useless and I couldn't even make it out of the driveway. I'm very happy with the replacement Bridgestone Dueler Alenza's in the 235/55-18 size. Now, it's fun to play in the snow. They're a great all-around tire, especially in the wet. They do spin easier on dry pavement, though. They're also pretty reasonably priced at about $150/ea.

The $40 rebate and free shipping at discountire.com makes them still cheaper.

I didn't hear anyone mention the Goodyear Eagle Response Edge... They are the #1 rated tire in their catagory from TR... I picked up four from ATC 255-55-18 at a little under $700 installed...

Ride is good, sound is lower than the E45's, pretty satisified so far...

20VUE06, I've thought about replacing my OEM tires with the Cooper Zeon in your same size. How would you compare the Coopers with the OEM, is handling and noise better, same or worse? Thanks

I've been running 255 45 18s for a few thou miles now, Falken 452's, but then I have Amer Racing 18 x 8.5 wheels. It's a "bit" rougher then original but with with the Eibachs and all it looks great. Definitely noticed an improvement in braking with the lower profile tires.
