Default Automatic MPG question

Is it better to drive in with the auto in drive or 3, when driving in town at around 25-30 mph? I heard it was better in 3 because then it doesn't waste energy shifting as much. Anyone know for sure (Scanguage results, etc) ?

Just leave it in D the computer does a great job of getting the best overall gear. BTW it won't go to 4th speed at 25 to 30 anyway. They have to get to about 35 or so to hit 4th speed.

^ ^ ^ what he said.

You use a lot more energy remaining in 3rd gear than what is used by allowing the shift to 4th when it is appropriate. The amount of energy used to shift gears is negligible.

With automatics the object of the game is to keep the torque converter locked. This is accomplished by not shifting gears.

The trans won't shift into 4th until 35 mph anyway, so D3 isn't going to do much. If you are going 35 and over, you wan't the lowest RPM operation anyway, so you do want 4th gear to engage. D3 is useful if you are going up and down steep hills at 35+, as it prevents the tranny from shifting back and forth from 3 to 4.
