1999 SL 1 manual 37.7 last 2 fill ups over 226 K on the car. I LOVE this little car! Our weather here 8 miles west of Hell, MI has been mostly in the teens and below for the last 2 months.

35.4 all highway to Hamden CT. and back, into the snowstorm. Not bad, all things considered. Snow, snow tires, sometimes slow moving traffic, and a lot of less than 30 mph with the auto tranny in 3rd gear.

First fill up with my new saturn, all I did was change plugs and wires so far. Has snow tires on it and I just inflated them alittle more and I got 32.8mpg. Pretty happy with that going from about 16 in my truck. All highway but with snow last week had alot of idle time on the highway.

I was getting a little paranoid because my mileage was dropping, but found out that cold weather is definitely a factor. Here in the Pacific NW we've had uncommonly cold weather as low as the teens. My average was around 35-36mpg but it's been a little warmer (40's-50's) and I just filled up and got 38.77mpg so that made me happy. I'm getting better with how I drive which will only help. Last fall I took my hunting rig (the saturn ) on a hunting trip and got 43.4mpg. That made me very happy!!!! DIYGuy is helping me with the IAT mod and I'm considering doing the 5th gear swap. I don't want to do too much but I'd like to be in the 45mpg range in summer, 40mpg range in winter.

Just filled up again got 34.5, makes me happy. The only things that changed is that I inflated my tires to about 42psi and I ran 93 octane in my first tank after getting the car and now obviously I am running just 87. Heard that the car may actually get worse mileage if they are filled with higher octane then needed. Anyone add some input on that "fact". Hopefully be around 38+ after I take the snow tires off and driving at 65 or less on the highway. Anything else I could do to increase my mileage? Thanks

Be gentle of the gas and coast where possible. I've heard to just stick with the 87 for mine because that's what it was originally called for. I do run fuel injector cleaner in it every other tank or so.

Higher octane fuels resist combustion. They are designed for high heat or high compression situations where regular unleaded would pre-detonate and cause knocking.

Using high-octane fuel in your car, which is calibrated for regular unleaded, is effectively retarding the timing by causing late combustion.

You're just serving to confuse the PCM as it wonders why the heck the timing is so far off.

Unless you've added forced induction (turbo- or supercharger), or have a custom tune specifically written to accommodate higher octane fuels, you are seriously wasting your money.

Thanks Andy, like I said only ran a tank after I first got it and now I am back to 87.

Only about 24 MPG right now, but that's a lot better than the 15 I was getting before I changed the ECTS. I'm also scared to let go below 1/8 of a tank, so I'm not sure how much more I could get out of that 1/8.

Snow storms constantly, winter tires, and a mix of highway/town driving.

Shhh... don't interject too much truth. Some here will try to tell you that all cars need higher octane.

Check the capacity of the tank vs gallons added. That way you know how much room your gauge leaves you just in case you're in a pinch some time. The farthest down I've ever run my tank left 2 gallons in it.

Last tank 38.71 MPG

Total highway miles probably less than 80 of the 370 miles driven.

Weather is finally getting closer to normal, but still cool for this time of the year in this area.

2014 average just shy of 37 MPG now. Not great, but better.

37.14 MPG last tank of 87 octane

Should have been higher, got stuck in the traffic mess from hell one day and spent the better part of two hours going a few miles. Oh well, I was expecting much worse. Now that most days are 40+ degrees at a minimum, warm up time is quicker and the MPG will be bouncing up.

2014 average 37.33 MPG
