Default A dream: An updated and refined Saturn SL

The perfect SL would have the following changed:

Higher grade steel subframe or improved rust protection.

A SOHC engine with a revised head (no cracking)or a DOHC engine with SOHC gear ratios for fuel economy.

A diff pin revision so I can spin the tires without worrying about destruction.

Top mounted battery terminals.

More leg room. My left foot has no space, lol.

Better seat fabric. The drivers left side lumbar always wears and tears from in and outs...

Feel free to add to the dream...

I love my 3 door. The only thing I would change is ythe third door on the opposite side. Maybe disc brakes in the rear.

That's easy enough... just grab a set from a junked s-series that has them.

1) Fairly common easy to do swap. Went from 33mpg highway @ 70 to 37mpg @ 70.

2) You just don't have enough spare transmission's. I have 3 (spares) & spin the tires all the time. It doesn't break, even redlining 1st & 2nd and having 3rd start gaining full traction around 30mph (did that once) or weekly drifting on back roads during the summer.

3) Again, fairly easy swap. 2 4g cables & maybe an hour to install...
...
The proper way to fix a S-Series automatic is to replace it with a 5spd O:)

Even with spares, you have the problem of getting stranded somewhere if the pin fails (even if you drive more reasonably when away from home, the pin doesn't necessarily come out when you spin the tires--spinning the tires shears off the small retaining pin, but the large pin may not actually explode through the side of the transmission for miles).

However, welding the pin in place does permanently solve the problem (assuming the welder knows what they're doing). There's also the option of an MFactory limited slip differential (manual transmission only) which doesn't even have the pin.

Better yet, a sixth forward gear, at about the MP2 fifth ratio. This gives you both the bottom-end pull and the top-end economy.

To add:
* More programmable / customize-able PCM
* NO &#$@*^ BCM
* Folding mirrors
* Five-lug wheels
* Separate lock and latch on the tailgate (wagon)
* Real towing capacity

+1 on the extra gear.

Or they could make a new engine and had better low end torque and keep 5 gears but toss 1st. 6 gears in our cars would be A LOT of shifting...as it is now, my shift pattern usually skips 3rd gear unless I wind out 1st in which case I skip 2nd and 4th.

Definitely need a spot to rest our left foot, I'm not asking for that much more leg room, just a dedicated spot.

New engine needs a remote oil filter location because stock one is in a stupid spot that ends up getting oil everywhere but the drain pan.

Keep it light. A new car will need to comply to a lot more crash standards and need more air bags, electronics etc...another reason why a new, more powerful engine would be nice...so weight savings should come from lightweight materials like aluminum and carbon fiber.

Better seats!!

How about this

http://www.autoholiks.com/wp-content...ee-Quarter.jpg

with plastic doors and quarter panels and a rather lower MSRP. And do it fast so I can get a good deal on a used one when my S cars burn out please.

I did a rear disc swap on my 99 SW2; the complete kit cost me about $65 at the junkyard. Great, easy mod.

Tommie -

I like all the things you are talking about. Here are some more :

- Aero-kit similar to the Chevy Cruise/Malibu Eco so that we can own the MPG high-ground.
- Oil drain holes in the pistons.
- Manual *everything* option, even if it costs more. I don't want power windows.
- Aggressive DFCO (Deceleration Fuel Cut-Off), aka down to just above the RPM instead of the 2500 RPM I am seeing now.
- Maintain the proportion of scale of the S-Series (I prefer 2nd-gen). I don't like the "tall" proportion of today's compact for the sake of increased interior volume.

Do we have anyone with skillzz in PhotoShop for a design update?

Default Ah, I've thought about this too :)

I reckon it's like fantasy football. My list:

+ better oil filter location, ideally on upper engine, hanging down so gravity works to prevent spills
+ diff pin welded at the factory
+ license the stainless steel shifter bushing from that guy who sells them on eBay
+ drain back holes in pistons!
+ heavier gauge wiring
+ 6th gear, for highway cruising

...and definitely the option for manual EVERYTHING. No gratuitous electronic bling and points of failure.
