Default It's been a pleasure - sold both Saturns

Sold both of my Saturns after unfortunately needing something I can rely on 100% of the time with longer trips. They were sold to a gentleman in Wisconsin, Eau Claire area, and wish him the best.

I gave the new owner literally everything I have related to Saturns; FSM, filters, SWP mirrors, those fancy S-series floor mats, etc.

I want to thank everyone here, I was very mechanically inept when I joined and thanks to SaturnFans I was able to learn so much about how vehicles work and even swapped both of my cars to manual. Thanks for keeping me on the road for 6 years.

Thanks for the 'departure report', jpsuli.

Congrats on handing down operational vehicles -- all mine have gone
to the junk yard, when i finally gave up on them ... although the
body shop where my '97 was towed after the timing chain broke, had
a mechanic who planned to revive it.

My landlord has about a 2015 Focus. He had a minor issue with the electric windows, but it is a rather fine vehicle, from what I see.
The engine is a peppy high-rever. Happy motoring!

Nice Focus RS! I'm sure that scoots along really well. I've been please with my 2012 Ford Focus SEL MT. Not as high performance as the RS but still a fun and pleasant car to drive.

I sure hope you have a manual transmission as the dual clutch automatic (DPS6) transmission is problematic. They have to be driven hard to keep them working it seems. I'm not sure is they resolved the issues after the 2016 model year or not. The class action settlement covered model years 2012-16.\

Take care

Jpsuli, congrats on the Focus RS! It would take a Fiesta ST or Focus ST at the very least to make me consider giving up my SL.

Actually, my dream would be to take the suspension from a Focus ST and put it in a manual Focus sedan. Don't know if I'd trust myself with the engine, though...

Strange, when i was tired to be unable to trust my car for long trips, i bought a Saturn. After more than 30 cars, it's the only one i have complete trust in. I guess you had different experiences.

I hope you will have a different experience than most people with the Focus too, since nobody who ever owned one in my area ever said anything positive from it after a week. Oops!

Good luck and goodbye even though we never talked before!

The main issue of the MK3 Focus is the automatic transmission which jpsuli does not have. The automatic configuration is a duel dry clutch transmission which requires a different driving technique than the typical AT with a torque converter. If not driven correctly it is prone to overheating, having excessive clutch wear and eventual failure. In most cases considered early failure by the consumer and Ford lost a class action suit for this reason.

I have put about 37K km on the one I bought used 2 years ago; it is a manual 5 speed SEL and has a total of 235K km now. I'm pretty happy with it and would not hesitate to buy another. The ST and the RS packaged Focus are pretty impressive and command a high price.

That's one of the best things about this place, lots to learn whether you are a complete newbie or an experienced mechanic. Even OldNucj (RIP) learned a few things here (a lot of it was over my head, lol)

What's the secret technique?

I looked at an auto Focus but my son, who had done some research when he was looking, warned me about the auto trans issues.

I looked at a Focus and Elantra a while back at the same place, was leaning towards the Focus because I kept bonking my head on the Elantra when getting in.

Drive it like you stole it! Seriously!

You need to treat it similar to a manual transmission. Don't creep while waiting at a light, quick starts to engage the clutch quickly and the usual stuff to keep the clutch from heating up and burning. Stop and go traffic doesn't help it much either. It is designed more for performance than luxury however it is in a commuter economy car. It's the wrong transmission for the target consumer.

Here are the other down sides of the DCT.

Quote:
Like CVTs, DCTs typically deliver good to excellent fuel economy versus other types of transmissions, but they do have a few downsides.

Some drivers might find the quick shifts with some DCTs to be abrupt and uncomfortable
When shifting between reverse and drive, a DCT can sometimes feel hesitant
A similar hesitation is sometimes evident during initial acceleration from a stop
Dual-clutch transmissions are typically not as adept at creeping forward at extremely low speeds when at a stoplight or inching forward into a parking place
For these reasons, many car makers prefer to use traditional torque-converter automatic transmissions or CVTs in their vehicles instead of DCTs. But for performance vehicles, dual-clutch transmissions remain a popular choice.

Interesting stuff, thanks!

I've been trying to avoid auto/CVTs but in newer cars, might not be much of a choice.

So, it's been about 2 months since I bought the Focus and it has been a problem child (not its fault!) but the dealer has paid over $3,500 in repairs due to their failure to sell me the vehicle with it properly inspected. I've been fighting the dealer on many of the items as they failed to repair a few things each time - makes me miss fixing the Saturn since I knew it'd get done right. Seriously though, without the knowledge, I learned from many of you, Richpin, and OldNuc I'd be hosed.

Anyone who is interested in a Focus with the automatic, I'd recommend avoiding it at all costs - I even have family who owns last year production of the Focus AT (2017?) and the thing has issues at 23k miles.

Also, arguably the most valuable thing I learned, no bolt is stuck on too tight ever for me now after dealing with my Saturn who lived in Chicago for its entire life

You should look for a Saturn as a backup car for when the new one is unreliable.

My wife has been driving the $200 Buick as the Lincoln MKT has been having issues.

Ford - what was I thinking?

I was actually kinda daydreaming about buying a Focus with an automatic, then converting it to a manual. I'd find a manual trans Focus at the JY first, get all the parts needed, then look for a cheap auto / blown trans Focus. I figured if I couldn't find a How To specifically for the Focus, I'd use Low Saturn's write-up for the Saturn conversion since the basic steps are the same.

Saturn (Sorry About That Untraceable Rattling Noise) > Ford (Fix Or Repair Daily)

edit: I've owned. . . an Escort wagon briefly, Tempo briefly, in my flipping youth; also owned a Taurus, wife's Contour, and a ZX2 which was actually my first Saturn's predecessor. Generally, they were decent, reliable cars but I really disliked working on any of them, had to remove too much stuff to get to other stuff, had some weird design quirks I didn't like. Tempo interior was not any spacious than the smaller Escort, Taurus had a flip over middle armrest to reveal cupholders and block the center panel, ZX2 had slanted dash parts you couldn't put anything on and oval radio, etc
