1994 SL2
Default Exhaust system primer...

Hello All: I am new to the Saturn forum. I need a lesson on the exhaust system on a '94 SL2 DOHC. My '94 still has the original exhaust system, but alas, it is time for a new muffler. Most of the rest still looks in good shape, except the hangers. I've done a search to get some exhaust knowledge that you all had discussed in the past and that has helped me understand some things, but I still need some clarification - i'm a little thick upstairs. LOL!

1) what is the resonator?
2) how is the Walker lifetime muffler as an OEM replacement?
3) what did any of you do to replace the hangers holding the entire exhaust system. The rubbers on my Saturn's hangers are still good, it's the metal hanger that holds the rubbers that has for the most part rusted through. Any advice on what to do here?

Thanks alot for any advice you can offer!

All original except the usual suspects...brakes, tires, oil, filters, s belt, s belt tensioner. This has been one exceptional car.

Get a new muffler and hanger from SATURN and you'll be good to go for another 12 years. Get any piece of aftermarket crap and you'll be replacing it every other year.

Thanks, SaturnTech. You sure are adamant about using Saturn parts. LOL! What's a ball park price for a Saturn muffler?

How do the new hangers work? The original one's look like they're welded into place. Is there a different way to attach the new hangers? Your input is appreciated.

Prices will vary from dealership to dealership, you can probably find your best price at one of the various online suppliers. I have absolutely no problem with aftermarket parts, but certain items I feel should be oem. I live in a very snowy/salty area of the country and you can just about listen to an aftermarket exhaust rotting up here. For me, it isn't worth the time it takes to replace it to cheap out on aftermarket parts for exhaust. If you do decide to take it somewhere, make sure they do NOT replace your midpipe. I have yet to see one fail for rust or rot.
As far as the hanger, once you get the muffler off, you will see how it goes together. There is an "L" shaped bracket that goes through a rubber isolator above the muffler, and the hanger itself bolts to that. Pretty simple once you get under there and get the muffler out of the way. Even with the new parts in hand it will become clear how it works.

Thanks again, SaturnTech. A muffler installation is in my future.
