I was an idiot the other day and forgot to put the car in park and had a similar experience. The key wouldn't come out so I released it through the little button underneath the steering wheel. I thought the security system was messing with me. I keep trying to start it and it did the same thing. Without the service car warning message though. Did he give any more info?

I haven't had that happen but I wonder if you did a key on key off key on, don't completely turn it over, turn it to where your fluid levels will show and your dash lights will come on, turn it off, turn it on to that spot again off and back on again and watch the lights flash, see if it does say 5 flashes and a hard pause and 5 flashes again, count the flashes, if that does work let me know, I have a thing of OBDII codes floating around here somewhere from my intrepid, I think that all OBDII would have the same codes (not 100% sure but that's what I would think)

This will only work on Chrysler vehicles. On OBD-II GM vehicles, you have to have a code reader.

It's a defect the ignition switch there's a TSB on it, your retailer will replace it without issue. If your leaves you somewhere and won't start, turn on the ignition and leave it on for a minute or so, then try to start it, it will then start.

Yes!! I have a 2003 Saturn Ion 3 and this just happened to me for the first time last night. I thought I was going to have to be towed home. I called AAA and it took me about 10 minutes to get through to them. After I got off the phone, I decided to try the ignition again since it had been a few minutes since my last try - it started and I made it home without a problem.

I had been driving the car for the past 45 minutes before this happened and the temperature outside was about 39 degrees so it wasn't an issue of the car being too cold. I am taking it to the dealership this Friday. I'm so relieved I'm not alone. Thanks, Maritime Storm, for the info on the ignition problem.

Now shouldn't Saturn consider this a recall? Or do recalls only deal with driveability issues (ie, turn signals)? I was lucky that my car wouldn't start right outside my house. I would have been f'd had this happened in a crappy part of town.

I have had this happen about 4 times now. 3 of those times it has been cold outside (40 or below) and once when it was a nice day out. I am trying to find some time to bring it to the shop. I am also going to have them look at my front damper bushings again because they are making a horrable poping noise again.

Havn't had THAT problem yet, thank goodness. It doesn't just die while you're driving does it?

Have dealer check neutral safety switch.
These are automatics were talking about correct?
Switch located inside console directly to the left of the shifter handle.
Car will usually start after a few minutes waiting with key off.
Had this problem about six times now.

Mine was a manual, but I had the Passlock Sensor issue. It also was quite cold outside (about 5F).

Hi,

Well I've now joined the no start/"service vehicle" crowd. As of 6:45am (CST) Friday 2-18-05.

Not that long ago I thought I might have avoided this seriously unpleasant problem for many years to come.

Never Say Never. Time to review my TSB list and get on top of any remaining items that might leave me stranded somewhere and get them fixed pro-actively.

Both of my area Saturns are booked up so I won't get the ION in till Monday afternoon... Hopefully the "Leave key in ignition for several minutes" will do the trick if it repeats itself.
