Thumbs Down Gas Tank Question?

I bought my Outlook in March and loving mostly everything. I know the gas tank is supposed to be 22 gallon tank. I have been running my tank as low as possible to double check the gas tank size. To this date I have never put more than 19.5 gallons in and that was really topping it off. On top of that my gas mileage is terrible. I am getting between 14-16 MPG in city, 18-20 freeway.

Has anyone else been able to put more than 20 gallons in their tanks?

Be patient - as we drive more(just over 2000 km so far), the mileage improves - it is almost to the predicted mileage, and getting better each time I fill up. I have never looked at the amount of gas, just the cost! I'll check next time.

It's pretty industry standard that the tank signals empty when there are at least 2 gallons left in the tank, so if you really want to be brave, just calculate what that would be for your car and pull a Kramer and see how far she'll go. I'm pretty sure there wouldn't be any reason to think that the tanks are smaller than they report.

Thanks guys! I know when the light comes on there is 2 gallons left, about 50 miles or so. I have ran this car to just fumes to see how much gas it takes to fill up and by doing so it only takes 19 gallons to top off. When we put gas in when the light comes on, it's about 17-18 gallons.
I talked to my local dealer and they said it was built that way and talked about the air in the tank. It's mind boggling!!! I was just wondering if anyone else is having the same problem?

I have 8000 miles on our Outlook and as you can see by the attached chart, I find no substantive increase in the average gas mileage over about a 4 month period. The blue line shows the weighted average which is about 18.5 MPG currently... and has been fairly steady over this period. This represents approximately 80% freeway 20% in town driving.

I look forward to results improving over time, but in my case that trend has not evidenced itself yet.

You are quite obviously not "running on fumes" if it doesn't take 22 gallons to fill it up. Also, consistently running the fuel level down that low is putting undue stress on the fuel pump, as the gasoline is what keeps the pump cool.
