Thumbs Down 2005 Relay

I recently bought a 2005 Relay and may I tell you this was the worst decision I have ever made. I have owned the car 4 months and it has been in the shop 5 times. I have had a burned out actuator, a burned out alternator, burnt out headlights and directionals. I have lost electric in the car twice. My wife and three year old son have been stranded twice and we have missed a combined 3 days of work for this lemon with a car wrapped around it. The dealership has been no help at all. They just tell us to call an 800 number. We have called it at least 10 times without getting a call back. For a company that is supposed to be prided on customer service, they have now lost a customer for life. I wanted to be loyal to saturn, but that will never happen again. If any one else has had problems with the relay please let me know.

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

Have you tried a different dealer?

The fact that the retailer can't find the root cause of the problem and rectify it, is not the fault of the Saturn corporation.

And all because the General thought Saturn needed an "in" into the minivan market. Yeah, great decision. Saturn did fine for 14yrs without a minivan, they should have just waited 2 more to release the Outlook and not mar Saturn with the Relay.

Le Car or Yugo would be tied for worst. Renault Alliance is 2nd place.
The things i'm hearing about the Relay are quite concerning.
I need to replace the Rendevous.
My father-inlaw has the Terazza version, maybe i'll borrow
that for a few nights and see if all those electrical problems
are on board that machine too.

Are these same problems being reported on the Uplander, Montana SV6 and Terraza?

If so it's a systemic problem not unique to Saturn. It's something GM as a whole needs to address, across the board.

Maybe NHTSA needs to lean on them a bit more.

I have not had this kind of experience with my 2005 Relay3. We now hav e over 13,000 miles on it with exactly ZERO issues (aside from the wife bashing in the tailgate on our mailbox!). I am sorry that you seem to have gotten a bad example. I cannot urge you more strongly to find another retailer to deal with, the one you have sounds horrible. Can anyone on the list suggest another one in your area?

There's only 8 complaints on the NHTSA website for the Relay, 2 of those are the same complaint filed multiple times, 4 of them are from 1 another, which translates, only 4 individuals have complained to the NHTSA about their relays.

I couldn't imagine the NHTSA opening a serious investigation, especially if Saturn's already addressed it with a TSB. Remember how long it took for them to do anything about the CRV and Ford fires?

Default Re: Worst Car Ever

My husband and I are having problems with our Relay 2 as well. We purchased it in Feb of 05. We have had numerous repairs but have had problems right from the start. We are going on our third alternator, two recalls, black and side trim replaced, weather stripping fell off, radio replaced, On star fix, new starter after 10 months and as well, when the van is cold and we reverse, switching to foward causes the van hesitates and then lurch. They have told us there is nothing wrong with it.

Our dealership as well as customer service are unwilling to admit that this van is a lemon. I have spoke to at least 5 people at the 1-800# and the only response that I get is "I don't understand what you are complaining about it is being fix under the warranty. This is why we provide the warranty." Perhaps this is so but what about when my warranty runs out. I will never by another GM and yes maybe all automakers are making compariable vechicals but not all are provide the same level of customer care.

I have wrote a letter to my local paper as well as e-mailed customer service. I will be writing to a much larger paper next as well as updating the local paper. I refuse to except that I spent as much money as I did on a vechical that is not reliable. We have a used vechical that we trust more.

I will continue to fight to have them fix this problem and if they do not then I will make sure that everyone I can reach will know about it. Already when people tell me it is a nice van I always make the time to tell them about the problems with it. I am going to have signs put on the side of my van as well if that is what it takes. There is no way that I should have to accept this problem.

Don't give up on your fight. Call the 1-800# again and get their name as well as their ext. Give them a time limit to get back to you. If they don't call you then you call them. They will probably not help you in any way. Ask to have your call Escalated. Then you will go to someone else who will not help you. Just keep asking to be escalated. Not sure what else to do. If I find anything else out I will post it.

I am very happy wth Saturn overall. I also have a 2004 Vue AWD V6 and it has been good. There was a campaign on the rear differential that was smoothly dealt with and I did have some bushings replaced under warranty. I drive the car fairly hard so I am not really disappointed in the bushings wearing out. At 33,000 miles the shocks are ready to be renewed, but that is pretty standard life for the OE units. Yes, the OE shocks on my Mercedes Benz wagon lasted longer, but it also had a $58,000 MSRP and cost me far, far more to maintain! Saturns are a fine value for the money.

Worst car? It's too early to tell. You're angry and you have a right to be. I won't take that away from you. My beef with saturn is:

1. dealers pretend to be your friend and screw you on the price and do less for the customer than other american dealers like ford, or other gm name plates like chevy etc.

2. The car was reported in my year to be the first car that is on par with the Japanese - it clearly is not. And no one at the dealers or saturn has any integrity or honesty.

Saturn: you make mistakes... fine, but make it right with the customer that's all I'm asking for. Respect me.

Now back to your issue....

Get rid of it now! It's a new model which is always something to avoid in any brand for at least 3 years especially an american car.

Saturn dealers are satanic scumbags that have no respect for the sheep that fall for their marketing departments ad's. They never did anything for me that they didn't have to except put in two cheap speakers valued at $15 and wax my car (supposedly paint sealent lol) but that's because they screwed up on the paperwork and shorted themselves $800. They said I had a signed contract and asked me if I would be "good about it" - i'm a christian so I paid it but I asked for extra consideration if I had problems down the line - needless to say they screwed me.

So many saturn drivers on this forum are totally decieved and under the saturn spell.

Hey saturn fans forum .... just ask the typical saturn driver on the street what how much they like their car. Whey I ask people (because I'm still driving my 1996 which I take care and it does ok) I'm embarased at what they say: slow, loud, cheaply made etc. My next car will be Japanese etc.

Like I said put your foot down, loose some money, call your states attorney general, do the lemon law but get rid of it now before it plummets 30% or more in value over the next year.

You really seem to have a hard-on for Saturn. In my own experience there has only been positives. I actually have found my retailer (Stevens Creek Saturn in Santa Clara, CA) to be far better at customer service than one of the Mercedes Benz dealers that I have done business with (out of business now, so I won't beat a dead horse). I have owned 3 Benzes but will not go back, the quaity of their cars now is terrible. Unfogivable for the outrageous price that they expect you to pay.

1. see another Saturn dealership.
2. Saturn should never have gotten the Relay- it looks too much like the Chevrolet and Buick versions to bother with. Kinda like Chevrolet and GMC a few years back... Chevrolet for the masses, GMC for those who wanted something a little more obscure.
3. They ought to drop the 250hp 3.5L Honda engine in the Relay. Much more fun than a 200hp v6 whose roots trace back to the 2.8L in 1981. <evolved into the 3.1, 3100, and 3400 v6s, and is now the 3500 and 3900v6s.

side note-
I'm not saying GM 60 degree v6s are bad, I have one with 130k in my car and it runs like a champ, has a nice growl to it, and is torquey but needs a bit more power to keep up with the newer more powerful foregin stuff.

back on subject-
4. Here's the Saturns my family had over the years...
1993 SC2- my parents bought it from my aunt, drove it for about a year and then sold it to me with 109k. I sadly traded it in with 126k, no problems besides blown speakers and the engine is pointed the wrong way.
1999 SL2- ran great over the duration of the lease.
2001 AWD v6 VUE- ran great while we had that...
then all in one day...
the last SC2 sold from Saturn of Grand Rapids for mom and a 1996 SC1 for my brother, both run great, the 96 SOHC is a lot slower than the twincammer, but my bro isn't really into turning a good set of tires into smoky oblivion like I am. Mom's SC2 was a fun car, but missing the lightweight go-kart feel of my old 93 SC2.
...then mom hurt her shoulder...
2002 Saturn ION3 auto- the Asin 5speed sucks with the ECOTEC in my opinion and the 1st-year electric steering takes some getting used to, but has proven to be super reliable. Saturn has refined the electric steering and swapped in a good Hydra-Matic 4speed which delivers equal mpg and is much better matched to the gear ratios.
2004 Saturn AWD3.5v6 VUE- damn it's fast, especially for a 'cute little suv' no wonder dad won't let me drive it. It's been flawless other than the time some guy ran into it, which isn't Saturn's fault.

There's no such thing anymore. Cars are global, not national. If you buy a Honda you are actually probably supplying more American jobs than if you buy a Chevrolet.

Saturn once was something like 90% American supplied. They were actually the MOST American car you could buy in the 1990's. The only thing I ever found non-American on the S-series was the starter (France) and washer fluid reservior (Japan). Now the engines are built all over the world, the L81 in England, the 2.0 Ecotec in Germany. And yes, all the 2004+ VUE V6 owners are powered by HONDA.

I would have no quilt or qualms about buying a Toyota or Honda. They listen to what the customer wants, and they'll get the business plain and simple. It's a simple concept GM hasn't quite picked up on yet.

Ok, done bashing. My point is there is no such thing as "American" anymore. Suppliers are all over the world and buying a Honda doesn't mean you're helping Japan and buying GM doesn't mean you're helping America.
