Default RPM jumps while braking on 00 SL2

I have a 2000 SL2 Saturn and the only problem I've had has been that the RPM has been jumping while I brake to a stop. It's a slight but apparent jump, and it's usually a bigger jump when I'm decreasing from higher speeds.

I love my Saturn, and this is a bothersome problem. The last thing I want to feel while I'm braking is the car trying to push itself forward. I'm not that mechanically adept, and I appreciate any help.

I believe your car is downshifting....

Oh.

The reason why I felt it was a problem was because I never remember it happening before.

Simple advice goes a long way. Thanks for your help!

no problem!
downshifting is good! When it doesn't down shift anymore then you might have a bad alternator. ok! But you would experience other symptoms as well.

I had a problem very similar to this. It would seem my car would have a loss of power for just a few seconds when I braked and mostly at high speeds.

This problem was fixed after I had took it in. The problem was the connections with the battery. I had tried to fix it myself but was unsuccessful. I winded up taking it in.

Not sure if this is your problem. But it sounds similar to mine so I thought I would post it.

This is not a problem.... The cars computer is helping you slow down... While applying your brakes and holding you will see that your rpm's do jump up for a second.. This system assists engine braking.

You can see it in the owners manual on page 225 (which talks about down hill driving).

My 00SWP has always done it when I'm coming to a stop when I hold the brake in one position.... That's when it kicks in...

Maybe someone else can direct you better then I have.. but I can assure you that it's a normal function...
